my dd did not get any of her 6 choices but would like to know how the waiting list system works. Is there any point being on a waiting list for a school where she has failed the 11+ exam? Can i place her on any school waiting list?Is it better to relocate?I am based in NW London....

The waiting list is created by each school based on their ranking of candidates - usually purely from the exam results but sometimes also from the interview if there was one and school report. You can't place a child on the waiting list if they're not on it already.

Most schools will take up to 20 from the waiting list as those with offers from other schools decide to take them leaving gaps.

Depending on how popular the school is I don't think you have a realistic chance unless you're in the top 30 and often in the top 15.

Hope that helps even if its not very encouraging.

I dont think you would get far on the list of the school if she has failed the 11+ but if you are in doubt then give the school a ring, if you dont enquire you will never know!

As for the other schools ring the admissions team from the borough council they are in and ask them where your child is on the waiting list, there is often movement two weeks after the original offer letters go out so she might be quite high up? Failing that you can always appeal!

here in Kent, you can only go on the waiting list for a grammar school if you have passed the 11+. Otherwise you go to appeal for non qualification.
Whereabouts are you?

sorry you said NW London. You'll have to speak to your local LEA. Do they have a choice advisor do you know?

You daughter probably has not failed just that she tried her hardest but it wasn't enough. I have a DD who is 12(Yr7) and and a DD who is 10(Yr5). My DD1 got into her 2nd choice and 4th choice. Her second choice was Mill Hill County and her fourth was Tiffin Girls' school. She's at Mill hill county at the moment and hoping that my DD2 will get in as well to make things easier for myself and my DH.
