reading through some of the threads on here I just wanted to let you know that the Connexions Service is there for students of year 9 upwards to age 19. They are completely independent of the school so can therefore offer impartial advice on what's best for your child in relation to what subjects they might NEED in relation to future career choices and if your DC's don't yet have an idea in mind then they can advise what careers could be suitable given the subjects that your DC have chosen.

They can also advocate on your DC behalf if there is any disagreement regarding subjects etc.

Please remember to use them if you are feeling confused. Usually they will be around on your parents evening / options evening but hidden away somewhere.

it is your choice not the schools.

We spoke to someone there recently and they were great, really helpful.

Were told the other day that this is one of the services that will be cut from April, certainly in this area if not nationwide Sad

It will be a bloody disgrace if this service is cut Angry

My daughter (Year 10) has had fantastic support from Connexions - not just from the careers/education side of things, but from an emotional well-being perspective. They were excellent!

Sadly, we have had a letter last week confirming that the service will be axed in our area from July Angry Sad

Ours was a hysterical disaster.
DS went in for his career's interview...

'can therefore offer impartial advice on what's best for your child in relation to what subjects they might NEED in relation to future career choices and if your DC's don't yet have an idea in mind then they can advise what careers could be suitable given the subjects that your DC have chosen.'

So he did the extended computer programme thingy, like some sort of dating website to match him with his perfect job.
Had to score everything, on a scale of like and dislike.
But he has Asperger's, so to him everything was either black or white, with too many closed questions.
They came up with some bizarre careers;
hat designer was one I think. Grin
The computer then asked him hopefully whether he'd like another attempt, as he'd limited his choices a bit.
DS declined.
Glad to know it works better for others though.
