HI,

My DC has been lucky enough to be invited to interviews at Oldham Hulme Grammar School. Does anyone have any idea what this may consist of?

As Oldham Hulme school is an independant school they can ask you to go for an interview. In a state school this would not be allowed.
I am sure if you ask the school they will give you some general advice as to what is expected.

Different schools have different processes.

At one of the schools ds applied for, 6 boys were taken off for a group interview, they did a maths and verbal reasoning quiz on the computer and were given an I-spy type activity all about the school, then they went in to see one of the department heads. While all this was going on dh and I went for a chat with the head.

It was a more 'traditional' approach at the other school - ds went in for about 15 mins (3 people on the 'panel'), he was asked what subjects he liked best, why he wanted to go to the school, what he liked doing out of school etc then he came out and we went in. Then we all went off to see the deputy head. Ds had done very well in the exam so didn't have any specific academic questions (i.e. no mental maths or anything like that) but some other boys who were a bit more borderline academically were put on the spot with times tables etc.

But best to ring the school and ask directly. What they don't want is a little drilled automaton - they're looking for a spark, enthusiasm, interest.
