in primary Ime you normally get a report ( say at easter) then a paretns evening after it.
at my dc new secondary ( and another one locally) there is a report that he has read already but wont get to bring home until the LAST day
what is the point of this?
where is the assessment for learning?

any opinions or experience?

Agree ,bonkers .
But I also think Academic Review Days ( " no you can't have that target ,it's not on the computer " ) and most parents evenings ( where you only get the report on the day ) are useless as well .
IME all they ever do is offer bland comments like work harder ,improve organisational skills etc .
Seem to steer clear of any suggestion that a pupil might be struggling in any area ,as then the school would have to suggest strategies to help child improve .
Sure loads of schools and teachers do it better ,and I think teaching hardest job in the world .
I'm not teacher bashing .

DD (Y8) got her report around two weeks ago. Primary dcs were last Friday. Both schools want parents to fill out receipt/comment forms - how will it work at your ds's school if they don't dish them out till the last day? Or maybe they don't want to encourage any comments!

In all the secondary schools I have worked in (which must be 5) reports have been staggered as to do everyone at thre same time would be impossible, I taught about 180 pupils and couldn't write all the reports in the same month! PE, Music etc may teach 400 pupils. So it may be

Y13 December
Y11 February
Y12 March
Y7 April
Y8 May
Y10 June
Y9 July

all schools have a different programme. The parents evening will be in a different term to the report to spread it out a bit. You may then get levelsat the end of each term in addition. They have never been last day of term though as you have to get reply slips back and there is always follow up with parents who refuse to believe have questions about Johnny's behaviour

We get ours on the last day as well. The tearoff strip on the first page is along the lines of "We are extremely concerned that Clarissa is not achieving at a high enough level in cocaine dealing/Roderick has got no results higher than a U in GCSE mocks, can we please have two minutes of the under under under head's time within the next two years please."

Well ok, teeeeeny exaggeration but I get the distict impression that they don't want to discuss anything unless the pupil's head is in danger of falling off.
