R4 - is it any good?

I am wondering if I should move to R4 as I am getting less interested in the sleb twaddle and music on other stations. So if R4 any good? Is women's hour any good? Am I getting old ?

You could be a closet R4 listener as a trial, if you get hooked, confess!

ps. How old is old? I got ds 14 next month into the 6.30 comedy and has got his friend into it, I even got them tickets to a recording and we are going again next month.

Try it on iPlayer .No music though.

R4 is most excellent. I could not be without it.

Is it a trick question? Archers, Afternoon Play, any decent comedy they get on BBC2 (Genius), ISIHAC (Freud RIP), JAM (Parsons RIP!).

I love radio 4. I only discovered it last week. I feel really grown up .

I am constantly amazed by the quality of great programmes on R4.

Listen in the late morning or late afternoon and you'll get really fascinating programmes.

Listen to PM at 5 and you'll never want for any other source of news (and may develop an aural crush on Eddie Mair).

Listen to the Archers and you won't be able to stop yourelf being hooked.

Listen to the 6.30 slot and bathtime/bedtime suddenly becomes so much easier.

If you're used to local commercial radio, you'll ask how you ever put up with ads.

Give it a go. Its nothing to be scared of.

I love Thinking Allowed on a Wednesday afternoon. And Desert Island Discs, of course. And Woman's Hour. Have never been able to fathom The Archers though. R4 is brilliant.

I nearly died when dh switched from Today in the mornings (hearing the news made him bad tempered - he's better now). For about 18m I couldn't listen to my fave progs - which I had to rely on since about 1983/4. Oh life was hardly worth living!

Well, not quite that bad, but I am so much happier listening to Today in the morning, and dh is too now - he's decided he likes knowing what's going on in the world.

I just have to get him off the "let's go shopping NOW" at about 12.30 on Saturdays....

With the licence fee alone. We have either r4, 7 or 2 on constantly at home and I'd be lost without it.

It also provides a good out if you reveal you know something you shouldn't ie

Me - Findus Crispy pancakes are really rather tasty since they've changed the recipe.

My mate - Urghhh don't tell me you eat those. I thought you were such a healthy eater.

Me - Oh heavens no ! I heard about them on radio 4.

It really works wonders in all kinds of situations.

I love it. Can't do The Archers but there is lots of brilliant stuff. You can find yourself riveted by a documentary on tzetze fly or something.

You are getting Wise. R4 is not for everyone, so if you like shallow sleb twaddle inane sports commentators and crap softporn pop then you won't enjoy it.

The comedy at 6:30 is absolute genius. It even has DS in stitches a lot of the time.

Just promise me you'll never listen to You and Yours.

I defected from R2 about 9 mths ago and haven't looked back. I've always listened of an evening in the bath, but boy, it is very good pretty much all day.
I am another 6.30 comedy fan. Loads of top stuff started there before movign to TV.
I like Women's Hour and I do listen to You and Yours .

Eddie Mair at 5pm is fab. I also like the Today programme.

R4 is the main reason to live in this country, imho.
Especially since they killed off bloody Barney on Go For It.

I absolutely love it and just have it on all the time. I love the serendipity of it, sometimes you come across amazing stuff and end up being so incredibly well-informed. I would pay the licence fee for that alone.

whatever you do don't switch on between 11.30 and 1 - always some really dire "comedy" followed by you and yours

i've been listening since i was a nipper, can't imagine life without it.
