Particularly when used by agonisingly posh men on radio 4 with some kind of writhing accent - they might as well be fiddling with themselves it sounds so vile.

Isn't it an architectural term? Are architectural terms intrinsically irritating?

It is an architectural term but that isn't the whole problem. I can live with a well posh bloke saying doric column and pediment etc. But it's the way they say:
"COOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOpulah!"
That makes me want to lie in the road.

It's the same for anyone posh suddenly falling into a foreign language with a massively dedicated accent, Italian is particularly bad.
