Fighting talk on 5 Live (aka 'BBC Radio Bloke')....

....is, I am assured, a very popular programme (and one of the most frequently downloaded podcasts).

...I have always avoided it however, remembering that I had been irritated by it when exposed to its delights some years ago.

However, friends and acquaintances of normally impeccable taste have assured me repeatedly that 'Fighting Talk' is side splittingly funny, and filled with pithy sporting observation.

...so, when it came on the wireless this morning, I did not (as would be usual here at Goth Towers) immediately retune to the Home Service.

...I would have posted this sooner, but have spent the intervening minutes mopping the trickle of blood from my ears, and placing a cool compress upon my forehead.

It isn't just bad, it is astonishingly, mind bendingly irritating. Every few seconds sound effects blare out meaninglessly. Bells, ships docking, blasts of the Hallejujah chorus....

Why? For Gods sake why?? I am amazed that more wireless sets (even rather attractive wooden cased Pure ones, like that sitting resplendently in the kitchen for Cook's entertainment) are not thrown from windows by crazed listeners, driven half mad by the senseless noise issuing from the device...

You may have gathered that I did not like this programme.

It CAN be funny but you do need a lot of energy and perserverance to put up with all the rubbish. It's also a very male programme. Agree that Eamonn Holmes show is dreadful.

love the american bloke most (Greg Brady)

I preferred the presenter before the Irish bloke (is it Colin?). I find him a bit irritating.

Johnny Vaughan used to do it and he was v v v funny on it. I think it helped rejuvenate his career.
