Fuckeulogies and catastrotunities - Hello Buglers?!

RocknRollNerd · 24/02/2013 09:52

Any fellow Buglers out there?

It's my Monday morning treat to ease the drive into work (each episode conveniently lasts about the same time as my commute). There's so much good stuff in it - I even tolerate the pun runs as John's reaction makes me laugh every time.

so it's just me then...

oh come on you lot - give it a go then we can talk about it on here... it might take a couple of weeks to get into it as it has a number of 'set pieces'/in jokes but it's well worth a listen. If you like the Daily Show on Comedy Central then you should enjoy it (John Oliver is on both) and it's kind of like the Now Show to an extent as well...

You can get it on iTunes or via Soundcloud.

Hurrah! There is a fellow Bugler here...perhaps some more will join us.

I know what you mean about it getting you up in the morning, I listen on my drive into work on Monday which conveniently lasts between 40 and 50 mins depending on traffic so perfect Bugle length and it does get the week off to a great start!

Link to The Bugle might be helpful in my quest to persuade more people to listen. Search on iTunes for the Bugle will get you to the free podcasts as well.

It's clearly lonely in Bugledom.

It feels like a quintessentially British Daily Show. With a good helping of past colonialist irreverence thrown in.

I try not to play it around dp. He's a huge pun-fan, and I'm not sure i could cope with a full on pun run in my personal life.

Although having said that, when dp came in last week and found the computer mouse in the middle of the floor, surrounded by Lego, and asked how the hell that got there; I might have replied with, "oh god, not another one! Sorry, the cat keeps bringing them in"

I hang my head in shame and blame the bugle entirely!

Grin

Apparently the Daily Show will be particularly British over the Summer... wonder what will happen to the Bugle as presumably John Oliver will be flat out? I really hope they don't go on a two month hiatus...

Have just downloaded yesterday's podcast ready for Monday morning, am hoping for great things as they have a new Pope to talk about!

Oh! Oh! Mumsnet Buglers! Two of my favourite universes colliding! (albeit a fairly minor collision from the looks of things). It's been my favourite podcast for a few years now and I was delighted to find all the archived ones - good to hear the full glory of the audio cryptic crossword and Hotties from History. How did you find out about it? - it seems to be quite a well-kept secret. I have a moderate tolerance for pun runs - some of the puns can be frankly poor, but I love the enthusiasm with which they are delivered and the despair with which they are received.

RocknRollNerd · 04/05/2013 11:43

Yay! Another one Grin.

I periodically have a big Bugle back catalogue binge and download a chunk of them, it's really fun listening to how it 'evolved' into what it is today.

I can't remember exactly how we found out about it. We're big Daily Show (and Colbert Report until More 4 stopped showing it ) fans so knew John Oliver from there and I'm a big cricket fan so was aware of Andy Zaltzman from the Confectionary Stand blog and stuff like that.

It is a bit like a secret club isn't it - I loved the letter they had once about someone deep in the mid West going through a toll booth with a podcast on and the toll booth attendant gave them their change and said 'fuck you Chris'.

I loved the Penis on Mars bit last week - DH and I were listening together on a long car journey (a rare occurance normally we both listen separately on our commutes) and we were chuckling away.

And still the question remains - MNers (especially those on this board) are by and large a fab bunch - why are they not all Buglers.

DH is getting some merch for Fathers' Day this year I suspect. I should also shove a bit more 'volunto-subscription' their way, can't remember the last time I paid and it is worth every penny.

Amazing, I normally come on this bit to lurk on 'The Archers' threads.

Imagine my delight to find fellow buglers.

I love Andy's sheer excitement during the pun runs.

Fuck you Chris Smile

RocknRollNerd · 16/05/2013 09:08

Yay! Slowly but surely we're coming out of the woodwork Smile. Hopefully over time we can persuade the Archers listeners to fill half an hour a week with Bugling.

I guess it helps that we have an easy way of identifying each other thanks to poor old Chris!

Was anyone else tempted to sign them up with the MN nickname FuckYouChris when a couple of weeks ago when they wound up on JDate and all the other sites Grin.

I listened to Answer Me This the other day - it was pretty good, but the producer's echoey voice really irritated me. Will try some more to see if I can get used to it. What made me chuckle was that Helen does pretty much sound like a female version of Andy!

Do any of you lot listen to The Nerdist as well? I pick and choose which ones as sometimes I have no idea who the guests are but when I know the person being interviewed I find them pretty good too.

I don't listen to the Nerdist but am always looking for recommendations for good podcasts.

I also love 'The Complete Guide to Everything' although the title is a complete misnomer as they spend very little time actually talking about the subject Smile

I normally like podcasts with just two or three people talking about something, don't really like guests as I can be quite picky about voices.

There's Answer Me This, which I find funny.

The Pod Delusion is good, even if their voices are a bit shouty,, for some reason. And I like The Skeptic's Guide to the Universe.

Does anyone have by other suggestions?

Oh, I forgot the truly fantastic This American Life.

RocknRollNerd · 07/06/2013 17:52

Which 'This American Life' is it - any clues for finding it on iTunes, I got quite a few when I searched by different people.

Back to Bugling, has anyone else noticed that Fuck-You-Chris seems to be telling us a story at the very end of every podcast - seems like a sentence a week in the same way as you used to get the 'secret' track at the end of a CD. So far we've had:

A fearless crew (234)
Stumbled across a fearsome beast (235)
And this frightened threeseome (236)

I liked the way they created the new word for that one! Can't imagine they'll be giving many more of them out in the future though.

It's a shame they missed so many in recent weeks, they would have a had great fun with Rob Ford I reckon.

Nerd, looking back over this thread, I have to second Seeker's recc of This American Life. Truly brilliant podcast.

It's hosted by Ira Glass, and you can search programmes on their website. But just listen it every week, and it'll enhance your life.

Sorry, i couldn't resist. I need a new name anyway (Tis crunch from earlier in the thread here). I'll try this one out for a bit. Something tells me everyone will think I'm a bloke from here on in though!

Ah, It's Monday morning and bugle time.

So Fellow Buglers....do we think they will come back after the hiatus? I really hope so...

Is anyone watching Last Week Tonight? It's very good (Sky Atlantic Tuesday nights I think) - DH and I had a conversation about how invested we felt in it - it's that feeling that the Bugle is a cosy club and John and Andy are 'ours' so you want them to do well and worry about them...or is that just me...

I am watching Last Week Tonight. Feel quite proud of John Oliver, actually.

He's doing very well.

I'm really enjoying Last Week Tonight, I get the impression it's doing really well - a lot of his in depth features have had really good coverage - the high spot was probably crashing the FCC website after the Net Neutrality spot. I am still enjoying the Bugle as he's still the same on it, I just wish they'd come out a bit more regularly.

There is a podcast called The Comedian's Comedian.

Standup Stuart Goldsmith doing in-depth interviews with a different comedian every week about how they started in comedy, what is their process for writing, everything, really.

The Andy Zaltzman interview was really good. They talked about how he preps for each week's Bugle, whether or not he feels jealous of John Oliver's success in the USA etc.

Well worth listening to. Here it is www.comedy.co.uk/podcasts/comedians_comedian_podcast/82_andy_zaltzman/
