Help - Childrens Bedroom Furniture but not too expensive!

HairyFairy16 · 30/06/2012 12:10

Hi, I am looking for bedroom furniture for my little girl. For a small wardrobe and bedstead and mattress with Next it's working out at around £550 and I could do with getting it a bit cheaper than this.

Any suggestions anyone? I've tried Ikea but no choice at all.

Thanks

John Lewis had some quite nice single bed frames that weren't that much dearer than the Ikea ones. Say about £30 more and they were much nicer I thought. But I know the rest of their furniture is dear. But you can get some good bargains in their sales if you are lucky. And I notice Tesco's does bedframes and furniture. Never tried them though.

Basic IKEA bed and mattress and a lovely colourful quilt/ cushions to spread over it. Second hand wardrobe (or IKEA and paint job/stickers to customise). Child sized wardrobes are a terrible waste of money.

Thank you! Will start investigating now. Have just found a few bits in the Argos sale too which work out much more reasonable but I'm not sure what their quality is like as never had anything from them before.

Littlewoods? It's interest free.

Gumtree is great for this kind of thing. People tend not to keep childrens furniture for years and years so it's usually in good condition and nice and cheap!

I agree that child size wardrobes etc seem a bit shortlived but the advantage of this is that second hand sets come up on ebay. My friend got a beautiful bedroom set for her son at a fraction of its new cost.

Or if your local newsagent or post office have adverts in the window, it is worth looking there. People sell off quite good items nearly new.

Definitely try gumtree/ebay/local ads. I wouldn't pay loads for children's bedroom furniture which will only last for a few years, but other people do ... and then sell it on. Grin

This set from argos looks ok quality.
I've had the scandinavia range from argos before (one of the cheapest real wood ranges they do) and it is fine. Obviously not amazing quality but good for the budget!

I got ds' bunk beds from littlewoods the same bed was £400 at m&s I got his for just over £200 and they're very solid.

We have ikea malm drawers and they are fab we only just replaced ours after about 7 years and only because they got water damaged in a flood.

We have the Ikea white childrens wardrobe (i think its called Hemnes?) and its great. I have no regrets. My friend has one from GLTC and to be honest, its no better quality (the door has dropped)... but was about 4 times the price.

I have bought second hand for children's bed frames - saw an advert in our local Sainsburys. Bargain of the year Smile. Second time I bought from Ebay - again really good quality. My tip is that "pine" furniture seems to sell really cheaply on Ebay / gumtree, which as long as it is solid wood, is very easy to sand down and paint. Did this for my daughters room - bought a solid pine single bed with pop up solid trundle (M&S) for £50. Painted it in F&B All White paint and it looks gorgeous.

Really, no choice in Ikea? I think they have a great childrens range and you can get your bed linen elsewhere. Or you could buy an adult single bed depending on her age, plus adult furniture.

I would definitely agree that if you on a tight budget, you should go second hand and if you are not in a desperate hurry you should join your local freegle or freecycle group. You would be amazed at how much stuff for kids comes up on there. Especially if you prepared to paint pine. But if time an issue then I would just go to ikea.

Ikea is great, and I changed knobs etc to upgrade them, and make them look a bit different.
