Yellow and green bathroom tiles... what flooring

Not something I would ever have chosen, but the entire rest of the house needs renovation, and the bathroom is actually in very good condition (aside from manky carpet and woodchip), so am pondering leaving it as it is. The bath, sink and toilet are plain and white.

There are tiles all around the bathroom, to well above head height, yellow with a strip of green at the edges. The woodchip above is currently painted yellow to match the yellow tiles. I could paint it matte white to avoid the expense of replastering, and try never to look up at it. We can't afford underfloor heating, and I prefer not to have cold feet in a bathroom, so I was thinking that we could maybe put down a laminate or vinyl floor.

I know it won't look great, but we have a tight budget. Or maybe I should go for the all out retro look and get some yellow cork flooring and a green toilet seat and shower curtain Grin

Don't put laminate in a bathroom - it cannot cope with water at all!
I think you'd be best with a plain white vinyl - they are cheap and easy to keep to clean and warm! They are also available in a myriad of colours and patterns but I think plain would be ebst so as not to compete with your tiles!
Good idea to paint the walls white about the tiles. Should help tone it all down.

Little note - if fitting vinyl, please remind your fitter to lift the toilet and place the vinyl underneath it rather than cutting up to the edge.....it's a hygiene thing and I have seen some fitters cut corners.

I second what innertiger says about lifting the toilet [and sink] to lay the vinyl. It is more hygienic and looks a billion times better.

Thanks for that - pulling up the carpet I realise that the floorboards underneath are not in the best condition - so I guess there will need to be a layer of plywood or similar too - this looks like an expensive job, and it absolutely has to be done.

I was imagining buying a cheap offcut of vinyl and putting it down ourselves, but I think it will have to be a professional job.

Bamboo is supposedly okay for bathrooms, and would look a lot better, but I am reluctant to take the chance.

There are also laminates that are specifically designed for bathroom use - e.g. this:

the reviews for the bathroom laminate look positive but I still think I'd aim for a white-ish vinyl. If you've already got white, green and yellow, I think adding another colour/texture in is going to look too busy. Wood or wood look floors work best, in my humble opinion, with simpler colour schemes. Danger of it looking all too busy.
Serach around for local independents who may well charge you a much better rate.....if you're not confident on the skills front then def worth getting professionals in!

Yes, I think I agree with you. I also prefer the feeling of quality vinyl underfoot.

I am just daydreaming about having fun with this, and going for full-on retro style, by adding cork flooring and a floral printed shower curtain.

We will be replacing the window, which might ruin the effect anyway...
