Heating help needed! No thermostat, always freezing or boiling

Hello all! We live in a flat where we aren't allowed to have gas heating, just electric. What we have is a few individual electric heaters, one on the wall of most rooms (not our bedroom, as no wall space) and nothing has a thermostat.

Therefore, in winter, it is generally absolutely freezing and we have to put the heaters on until it is too hot, turn them down/off then it becomes too cold and we turn them up/on again. (and repeat over and over) We have a free standing radiator in the bedroom which keeps us warm, but of course over night, the room becomes uncomfortably hot.

Of course, this stupid arrangement all costs far too much and is probably environmentally horrible too.

My dream would be to have a central thermostat somewhere, set it to a reasonable temperature, then have the heating go to that temperature and just stay there. Is that even possible, or am I dreaming?

Please, can some other flat-dweller, or someone clues up about central heating help me?

Are the heaters plug in types or are they wired into the electic supply?
If they are plig in, have you considered getting timers that go into the socket in the wall? That way, you can have more control over the heating, such as setting it to come on before you get up, or to come on and go off so it doesn't get too hot.

They are mainly wired in, unfortunately, but I could use the timer idea for the one in the bedroom which is a plug in on wheels. Thanks purepurple!

lisanthus, it is not a good idea to use a portable electric heater in a bathroom and if it was supplied by your landlord it is also illegal. Oil filled electric radiators are the way to go for all your rooms, they are cheaper to run as they have a thermostat and some models have several heat settings, radiant wall heaters are useless in comparison to the oil filled type.
