Inspire me please- South facing room, colour scheme ideas?

Just want some ideas for colour schemes for a dining room in a late victorian terrace- south facing and gets really good light all year round.

There are 3 doors off the room, so quite a lot of woodwork, lovely high ceilings but no picture rail/frieze.

We spend a lot of time in this room - it's quite informal (all meals, lots of playing, and DH has his computer in there) but it's so dull at the moment (pale appley green, really don't like it).

My children are very small, so I don't particularly want wallpaper- I could countenance one wall papered, but 'feature' walls are so passe now I really don't want to do that

The rest of the house is in pale colours but I'm not averse to something more dramatic (and once I've started I may well move on to other rooms...)

Any ideas at all welcome!

I think the light in south facing rooms means you can choose from cool or warm colours. What about a warmer colour - apricot, lemon or terracotta. You could complement with bright rugs? What's on the floor now? Personally, I love all the red/ rust/ scarlet of a persian rug and then just pick an inoffensive warm shade of cream for the walls.

Agree, feature walls are naff.

Thanks mitford- I shall have a play with that this evening.

I think a rug is out though- our dining table is v heavy and cannot be moved easily for cleaning, but my children are still at the 'drop more on the floor than goes in' stage

I'm in the same boat as you - practicality is coming first until the children are old enough to stop flinging food around.
