as bare minimum, accident book entry and phone call to parents shortly after incident.

How utterly dreadful!

At DD's school this would be straight off to medical room.
Head teacher would be involved with sorting out what happened (for all major injuries and all head wounds fall into this category).

Accident form to parents, possible straight off to hospital with the SENCO (who also does medical)as say, when a boy broke his leg. This sounds like a straight to hospital for me. I'm a first aider, I would have sent your boy to hospital.

Parents phoned immediately.

If injury caused by wilful harm (as opposed to true accident) then child would be disciplined and parents called in as well.

Any stupid accident caused by carelessness is always mentioned in assembly to enforce the "play safe" code. Any being mean to a person injury is also discussed in assembly...no names are mentioned and it is discussed in general "play nice" terms but of course, by then, every child knows who did what and it's all round the mum's circuit as well.

I would have expected them to contact you, record the incident, explain how this headlock happened (play? bullying?) and to administer first aid.Possible outside medical attention if there was sightloss...how old is DS?

coppertop · 12/04/2010 15:40

I would expect a phone call straight away. One of us (me or the school, depending on the circs) should then arrange to take ds to A&E.

The headache and temporary loss of eyesight makes it more than a simple head injury IMO.

Once ds1 had been seen/treated I would expect an investigation into how it happened.

Report
Hassled · 12/04/2010 15:41

If he lost his eyesight I would say an immediate phone call to you to ask if you wanted them to take him to A&E, or to contact your GP. Certainly every effort should have been made to contact a parent, and if they couldn't then I think A&E themselves.

LilRedWG · 12/04/2010 15:42

Immediate phone call and trip to A&E. If done maliciously then other child's parents called into school.

Please leave your tell me they didn't just leave DS.

I would expect to be called straight away. The loss of vision would be a big deal IMO. I would also expect the child to be taken to hospital, by the school if dh or I couldn't get to them within, say, half an hour, or if they could not get hold of dh or me.

Definitely full record should be made, and investigation into whether it was accidental play, or deliberate. Action taken as appropriate.

I'm not a fussy mummy, find all the first aid notes that the dc get sent home with for the least graze quite amusing, but a head-knock like this would be different.

Med room for ten minuytes, back to play, no call

Note after school saing small bump but nowt else, yteacher told me they couldnt find out what happened whihc ds1 tellls me is a lie

Previous incidents have included a fall that broke both front teeth being ignored, not even a note just sent home, and in the infants ds3 fell, cut mouth, was made to eat lunch, call (bearing in mind at that time ds3 was asd non verbal) to say probably OK but did we want a look- needed stitches by specilaist surgeon (many, internal and external) and left permanent scars

I loathe that bloody place

his TA (ds1 has AS) has been sent away with a school trip again for a few days, nobody there who knows him we can trust

Phone call to both sets of parents immediately, A phone call to NHS direct for advice at the very least and parents advised to collect child and seek medical advice straight away.

Offending child given suitable punishment

Have you spoken to any of the Governors? That sounds piss poor, tbh.

I've just e-mailed the Head with a very cool / cold mesage to say that we want to know why this happened and we wopuld like a copy of teh accident book ( historically that has been refused and we know from other sources that events have never been recorded, last time it was ds1 hitting ds2 (I know, we are trying to get him an ASD placement in yr 7) and when the heat melted the gym floor and ds2's foot stuck and tore the skin off last year

I am making myself sick listing it, and it ahs become very clear the palce is a shambles. Too much this time.

DS1 is in the last bit of yr 5 so not sure we could get him a palce elsewhre, only 1 other school and even that is a trrek tbh and wouldc ause problsems with ds3's SNU pick up. If I don't get proper response from school though am going to sit DH down and talk to him about it.

Joke is this school is over subscribed with a waiting list. I bet half the aprents don't know what goes on.

When ds2's foor was hurt, we got to school to find him there with blood pouring from it (from what we can work out, gym floor became damaged by ehat, they were taken in anyway and told to dance barefoot but keep moving; ds2 has attention span issues and didn't, when he did jump parts of the sole stayed behind. We enver managed an explanation for that either, and Head has since left) and we were just told to take him to the GP, he in fact needed hospital and crutches for days. When he returned they complained as he was on crutches. At teh end of the year that incident lost him his attendance award.

Fekkit. I ahve ds1's review due any week with an attempt to get him the unit place, last thing I needed was this. Buggery and rude words.

It will certainly go in the review info yes, and I ahve asked for an accident report.

We got a note about the head injury, standard pre typed one they all get, and teacher was there to explain as his link book is yet again misisng but she specifically said he was Ok. ds1 says not true at all, and whilst he is no angel, form makes me think..... iyswim?

Calrissimo [shocked] Surely that's counter to the most basic health and safety procedures? How on earth could the school think it was appropriate to send children into an unsafe environment, and expect them to take responsibility for their own safety in that way? Was there ever any investigation into the incident with the gym floor? It sounds like much more than 'just' a child with SN being unable to follow instructions.

A formal complaint to Ofsted is necessary. I know if a case where achild hit his head atunchtime and was told to ' give it a rub' and during afternoon school he slid into a coma because of a bleed and fractured skull. Any head injury shouldbe treated as serious.

An accident book is mandatory as is the way accidents are recorded. Phone Ofsted and they are obliged to investigate.

TulipsInTheRain · 12/04/2010 16:46

immediate phone call, i'd be 'strongly recommended' to bring him to a&e but he'd be sent home either way.
incident report written and signed by me.

Wow, this school is disturbingly bad by the sounds of things! I'd pull them out before anything more serious happens.
