Yr 2 SATs and day off!

Hi!
DD is in yr 2 and the school has issued a general notice that no time off is allowed next half term. However I have a work thing at a weekend where the family can come and as we will prob not get a holiday I want to take advantage of free accomodation etc. This will mean taking 14th May off- dilemma being do we take a sickie (rather not as DS at attached juniors and will look suspicious and prefer honesty) or do I request day off , get rejected an have argument?

I am also a bit peeved that DD who is very clever has drifted for the last three years and been a bit bored , is now having extension classes with a few others conveniently just as the tests are approaching and she will be a good level 3 bet....- she was upset at missing the Easter craft activity although she is really enjoying the challenging work. Just feel annoyed at being dictated to for no real benefit to us!!

Anyone got any thoughts?!

It's not the end of the world if your DD isn't there for a test, since the levels reported to parents and the LA are teacher assessment. Having said that, if a child in my class missed a test, I would try to find time for them to take it when they return. Can you ask your child's teacher if he/she has already got a planned timetable for assessment, and whether your DD being absent on that day would be a problem?

dd missed a day last year during her sats (funeral). i'd just go ahead and request a day off. dd's class were split into smaller groups for the sats papers, they just moved her to a different group that week so she did hers on a different day.

Yup! I'm not bothered at all about what level they give her since the junior school only go and do it all again in Sept- and generally lower.....and I'm not bothered about levels anyway- more bothered that they only seem to be taking an interest just now- just know head will get arsey- if she does I'm quite tempted to home educate until September.!

You don't know our head! My sister took her DS(only level 1 anyway) on a day trip and head made a fuss of not authorising it- like sis really cared...but it does put a downer on things. Oh well!

There isn't a set date for Y2 SATs and it's an easy matter to administer the test another day if a child misses one.
Extension classes now are unlikely to have any impact as the levels reported are for the work done week in and week out by the child not the test results.

I think I would consider carefully my relationship with the Head going forward and whether or not that was more important to my child's education than this day out is to the family as a whole.

I personally partly get in line behind the head and send my child in for SATs. Partly for the reason noted above, but also because I want my children to know that school is more important than holiday... beacuse it is.
