I teach abroad and am renegotiating my salary. I taught for ten years in the U.K, but I know that salaries have risen massively since I left. Could anyone advise on what a classroom teacher with 20 years experience would make per month, into hand? TIA

Are you qualified as an Upper Pay Scale teacher? They make a lot more than those on the main pay scale, but you have to show proof that you're experienced by providing a portfolio (although this changed this year so now just reference letters and show that you have achieved your professional development goals).

Haha. Don't worry, I'm still figuring it all out and I've been teaching in this country for 6 years! Upper Pay Scale is for teachers who have taught more than 5 years in the UK. Every teacher should have a professional development meeting which includes an observation by your head or line manager. They give you constructive feedback on your lesson and give you some goals to work on to improve teaching. Those goals are your PD goals. When you have taught for over 5 years you show that you have achieved these goals in your last 2 years, have some letters of reference written by your line managers, and then you are awarded upper pay scale (or sometimes, you're not, depending on how you do). Being awarded UPS gives you a good jump in salary, which increases every 2 years. HTH
