Top 10 Metric Mental

When I was at school in Scotland we used a series of books called Top 10 Metric Mental. Each year you had a different number and colour of book and then each morning you did 10 mental arithmetic questions at the same time as your spelling. The books were great at developing mental arithemtic ability.

I would be very keen to get hold of them or something similar for my DD - i cant find them on the intranet and wondered if anyone had heard of them or knows of something similar to help mental arithmetic as she is always wanting me to post mental arithemetic questions.

Thanks

At the junior school I work at we do a 'Daily Ten' mental Maths where the children have a grid like this and each morning the teacher writes up a task on the board, such as A+B or C-H, and the children then do that sum for each row on the grid. We have different grids of various difficulty (eg in the upper school we'd have a column with decimals, which might then have to be added to or subtracted from a whole number.) Once you've created the grid(s) you can get a lot of variety of questions very simply.

Not very helpful but I remember the books fondly. I used to love them. We used to get a prize from the teacher when we finished working our way through each book. Went to a very competitive girls school and some pupils finished the book in around 3 days of slogging away on their own in the evening. They were quite addictive and did get quite complicated at the end with decimals.

Would love to see them again too, reminisce and save them up for my dcs when they are ready for them.
