Good ideas for "green projects"

Our local council has grants available for community projects under the banner clean/green/safe. Last year our primary school received funding for bike racks and cloth bags. The pta want to make an application for funding for new projects but deadline soon and need ideas.
Am thinking veg patch and living shield (climbing plants that shield playground from busy main road and absorb pollution)
Does anyone have experience of those things and advice as to what to apply for and/or any other ideas. Doesnt have to be gardening based e.g something that encourages cycling/walking

Walking bus
Some recycling project - compost bins, wormeries, etc
Willow tunnels and mazes on playing field.

Can't advise - these ideas are what my school have done in the past couple of years. No funding though! We missed out there!

Can you tell me what a walking bus is?
We are an inner city state school - sadly no playing fields!

The walking bus is volunteers (normally parents) picking up children from pre-determined 'bus stops' and walking them to school and seeing them through the doors. Each 'bus' has an adult front and back and and usually has a maximum (10?) children to accompany. Schools could have any number of buses depending on the how many volunteers there are.
When it works it relieves the traffic congestion around the school considerably and obviously is a greener, healthier option. Funding could be used for e.g. training of volunteers, flourescent jackets for adults, flourescent patches for children, advertising etc

I don't know how feasible this would be, but what about:

1. Toy exchange/library
2. shoe database. I was speaking to parents and one of he the highest costs clothing wise are shoes, most of which get thrown away after a few months.
3. Buggy loan scheme
