DD (5) says she doesn't like school and wants to leave...

DD has just started year 1 and was crying tonight saying she didn't like school and wanted to leave. (I was in tears hearing this) It seemed she was told off for not doing some work in class because she didn't realise that she had to do it. The problem is she doesn't listen...any suggestions on how to get her to listen.

As for homework.... she has two reading books for the weekend plus ten spelling words.... this seems excessive for a 5 year old in my opinion - or is this normal. ?? This is a private school - what happens in the state sector?

Thank you.

It's a long time since mine were in yr 1, but that is excessive. How long are the reading books?
However I'm afraid that's private schools for you IMO.

Nope. Sounds normal homnework or even light for Y1 in our state school TBH.

Go with the flow for now: it's only two weeks in and it always takes time to settle down. Talk to the teacher about how unsettled she is and try to work out between you what will help.

God I'm out of it- don't think mine got spellings till yr 2. But then, I've forgotten so much of when they were little.

Thank you for helping me see reason - I may talk to the teacher as she seems v nice and approachable.
I'm surprised by the homework since I don't ever remember getting any before I went to secondary school --- but it was a v long time ago...(1960's -anyone remember them?)
FIngers crossed for school on MOnday. . and thanks again

My DS1 has one reading book and no other homework. He's still on relatively easy books so would be find with more than one.

Ten spellings a week completely normal in Year 1. Two reading books also sounds pretty average - depends of course on the books, I would say yes if they are ORT or similar (and assuming Level 4/5 and not 10 or 12), no if they are long chapter books.
