cancel the holiday

He can't retake them - he'll either have to miss them or you'll have to change the holiday. Any sanctions will depend on your LA's policy.

Holiday in TERM TIME?!!

Did you seriously not realise he would have exams/tests this summer? Cancel the holiday. If he gets no marks for KS2 SATs then he'll be stuck in bottom groups for everything at secondary school.

I can never truly understand parents who take their children out of school during term time because they can't afford holidays during the allocated holidays.

i wouldnt worry too much if it only ks1 very different to ks2

No idea about sats but my god trace you need a holiday. I wouldn't worry

This is probably down to my father being a head teacher but say for example your child misses a very important stage in Arithmetic? It would take a while for them to catch up and I find schooling FAR more important that a jolly holiday. We haven't been able to afford a holiday in 3 years, I would never consider DD1 missing school just so we could. If you can afford a holiday in term time, you can afford a cheaper holiday in allocated school holiday. Each to your own though.

A friend of mine took her DD1 (year 1) out of school in January for 2.5 weeks. Her DD1 isn't doing too well as it is and when she returned, she has struggled immensely to catch up. Doesn't make sense to me.

Even though he is in KS1 this isn't true for anyone who might read this thread with KS2 children. They would ask the teacher to do an assessment and also the school usually set their own tests in the first term to work out what groups everyone should be in.

I would cancel the holiday.

We have just had a meeting at school about the Y2 SATS and we have been told that no holidays will be sanctioned for that time.

I cannot understand why people take their children out of school for holidays at all. I would not dream of it as I think it sends a wrong message out to your own children that holidays are more important than school.

They can get so behind on subjects and basic learning.

DS1 needs his tonsils out but I dont want it in term time for the same reason so am waiting til the Summer holidays.

But likewise Pg OP child may be very bright and ahead of the class and i do think that if your child has no time off school normally then a week or two to experience a different culture / environment has a lot of benefits too.

I still disagree Lilyloo but as I said, each to your own. In my mind, school time is school time and holidays is for holidays. They get enough time off, why take them out for more? Sorry but I don't agree with experiencing another culture etc, most Brits take their children to Spain where it is a warmer version of the UK. The most culture they see is the swimming pool.

OK, this is just my opinion, but I never thought SATs were all that .

If it was me I would go on holiday! When I was at school, we took holidays during term time as my father was in the forces and so his leave was dictated to him. We never had the pressures of exams at such a young age either!

My son took Key stage 1 sats and it was taken over a period of days,we werent even told they were doing them,so he could have quite easily not been at school if he was ill.

Surely missing a few weeks isnt going to harm their education at such a young age? Life is a lesson too!

I still think it sends out the wrong message to our children though - holidays more imp than school.

KS1 is different. Teachers can do the assessments from January onwards. They may have already been done and you wouldn't know.
But as a teacher I'm just very because I NEVER get a cheap holiday.

I think it is up to parents to make that kind of decision. Fine to do it if you are happy that dc might miss important school work and also if you don't expect school to help them catch up on what they've missed.

For me it would depend on what and where and what age. We missed the first three days of term last term because we booked a holiday last April and school subsequently changed the term dates (we had booked in holiday time). Got a very apologetic letter from the head.

Next year I may end up booking the same week so I'll know that my ds will be missing school. I'll have to weigh up what he will miss by what he will gain from the holiday and I know that it will be up to me to make up the work he has missed on those three days. I will most probably do it as he gained so much confidence from his holiday activity that it has been a revelation.

I'm an experienced teacher. In my opinion SATS don't benefit the child. Your child will benefit greatly from time away with you at KS2. Your little one is not missing GCSE or A Level preparation so enjoy the time with her while she is only doing meaningless SATS. If you're worried, check what work she'll be missing and cover it yourself. Just don't expect teachers to mark it or to plan exclusively for her.

In my experience we didn't really refer to SATS in order to set children at KS3, especially if he or she was absent for the test - how bizaar would that be?

Enjoy your holiday!

lol go on holiday and just tell the school you are withdrawing dc from the SATS because you do not agree with them

As for delaying medical treatment to school holidays that is daft IMO - when my ds needed grommetts it was best for everyone that he had them in term time because he was missing so much work by not being able to hear!

And considering some children can be sick for a week, or more, so not be at school surely the stuff about missing school work is a bit of a red herring!

No reason to cancel the holiday for Y2 Sats, which are not statutory anyway. Your child could be assessed the week before/after, or anytime really.

Where are you going, anywhere nice?
