Like any decent parent the safety of my child is always of the upmost importance to me.

Therefore despite notices in school newsletters, very rare police presence and frequent near misses by drivers trying to drive around the other cars blocking the way usually due to the nifty footwork from the pedestrians tragic disasters have been avoided, car drivers - most of which are of course parents - think they can park their cars wherever they like outside our school - on zig zags, straddling narrow pavements and double yellow lines, blocking entrance and exit of the large and unused by many car park thus endangering the life of children and parents who decide to take their life in their own hands by daring to walk to and from school.

I have frequently had polite words with these people if they happen to be blocking the pavement forcing me and ds to either walk into the race track road or into a load of high nettles and dog poo. All I get in return is abuse even though all I am doing is pointing out how dangerous for the other children their driving / parking habits are.

This taxi driver this afternoon though really did take the biscuit with his rudeness and attitude. I mentioned to him that as a professional he should be setting an example to other car users - did he realise how dangerous it is when drivers park there? I just wonder if the parents of the little girl he was picking up would want somebody who has such blatent disreguard for safety of little children driving their dd home from school.

What will it take to make these people change their dangerous, selfish and life threatening behaviour?

Ring the taxi firm and the police and ask them both if he would of had permission. Then at least the taxi firm would understand he is breaking the law. Or you could put a complant into the police about the danger of parking lately.

It's a popular misconception that the yellow zig zags on their own mean that it's forbidden to park there - they are advisory only. You are only committing an offence if you're causing an obstruction. What you need to do is get the school to apply to have them made enforceable. Then a sign will be displayed advising of the hours when parking is forbidden. Then traffic wardens will come along and issue tickets - we did this at my local primary school when my sons were there. I think it cost the school about £1000 but they were able to get a grant to pay most of it.

He's still a tosser, though!
