I think we got a form to fill in if we disagreed but then I forgot about the form and the next time I found it, they had already been weighed lol

yes, mine mess with the stats too because they are like little runnerbeans

They already did it it my area last year as part of a reception health check along with a hearing test. I was quite interested. Am not sure about in year 6 though, am sure its gets more stressful then.

they do take it further if they feel they need to don't they? (that was the bit I didn't like). We have a school nurse who fulfills that role. I have no idea how school works really (in this respect).

I opted out of having my 2 weighed and measured in Year 6 - infact in DS2's class only 3 children were done.

I can't see anything wrong with being weighed and measured.

When it is Year 6 children it gets a bit stressful. My DS is short and chunky (bit like me really) it really, really worries him. I filled in his form saying 'no way, don't you dare, don't even think about it.'

A few days later I said 'Was everybody weighed and measured?' He said 'yes mum but some of the girls were comparing weights and getting upset.' I replied 'I'm glad that I said no to it on the form.' He said 'oh I had it done anyway you worry too much about stuff Mum!!!'

Think our government should worry more about the stabbings, shootings and killing of our young people than about how much they weigh and how tall they are.

As far as I can see Cod - nowt is done about it! It just makes good headlines on the news....'a survey that has been done indicates the levels of obesity in young children....'

Another waste of money??

Of course I will. I am intelligent enough to know myself if either of my kids have a weight problem and to do something about it if I wish.

You should be proud of your DS shabster, he sounds a lovely boy with a sensible attitude.

i don't trust school teachers to deal with things like weight the same way i would want them to - after all they can't even deal with insects in the classroom the way i would as they appear to scream, jump up and odnw and kill them which is't my respoinse at all - pathetic 24 year olds

Thanks Abbey - he is a good kid. He's my 4th DS born when I was almost 41!! Bit of a shock!

I wasn;t going to, and then when DS2 had his nurses check-in in reception I went along so I could explain better about his bowel condition etc.

anyhoo....

she weighs and measures him and then lauched into a huge big rant about how his centiles don't match and that he is slightly heavier than his hieght etc......I should be feeding him this, that and the rest etc....

I asked her what planet she was on......DS2 was a normal weight at birth and then proceeded to drop of the centiles completely.....from a 7.15lb baby at birth he was just 16lb on his 1st b/day, and he had had wieght putting on issues since, and with his allergies and bowel probs, he was still small, yet had actually just put on wieght, for which I was thrilled!!!!
how dare she imply that I was doing it wrong....in fact....the food she said to feed him was the very food he is allergic too!! (lots of dairy to ensure calcium etc, but low fat to stop weight gain!) If he eats dairy, he will be very very ill.......altho it would 'cure' the wieght 'issue'

I just ended up telling her that seeing as I had almost lost him as a baby, and he is now a rather 'healthy' child allbeit with some health issues, his centiles being 'odd' were the least of my worries.

the most stupid thing was, his hieght was on the 0.4th line, his weight was on the 9th, so hardly indicative of a majorly overweight child anyway! all the farkin centiles lines are utter crap....they are used to scare new mums into thinking they have a majorly sick child when they are clearly thriving in all other aspects (me at one point in fact), and used to 'prove' said obesity panic.

so.....I have no lost complete faith in the normallity of all the so called school nurses and will be opting out from now on!

I imagined the point was to create new centile charts - but maybe not.

My little runt will bring down the averages, and hide the obesity problem, I should imagine.

Psycho - I am just standing up and applauding you - well said love!

I was told I was doing a rubbish job with DS when I was breastfeeding him cause he was very slow with his weight gain. Now because he is a few pounds overweight I was ready for more comments - suprisingly school Nurse must have seen my face and thought 'leave it...'

I am becoming the 'nan' out of Catherine Tate. Cant even start to tell you the heated debate I had with the school nurse about MMR injections....I bet there are notes about 'loony Mam' all over DS4's records

it utter utter crap the way they go on and on and on about height/wieght etc.

and they cannot see that if kiddies are a little bigger than they used to be, that they are in fact partly to blame!

they sell off all the school fields, meaning nowhere for them to run properly and play.

and then they fail to address parents fears over why we don;t allow our kiddies out to play properly.....erm.....becuase we are scared of someone getting them and maybe harming them and then knowing that the police have their hands tied so much nothing can be done, plus all the traffic about now-a-days.....

AND

they make us feel as tho we should have our kiddies taken away if we are in fact sensible enought to realise that we can allow our 7yo to go the the shop for us, walk to school if close enough on their own (oh, the gasps of horror from some mums), and just know that our 7yo is in fact quite sensible and no harm will come to him in 5mins out of our sight!!!!

the government has so well trained us into seeing danger to our kiddies at every possible turn that we comply and keep them tied to our apron strings and THAT is wrong too.....we then make them all 'unhealthy'.....

oooh, I don't know. Dd1 (nearly 9) is a bit overweight, she doesn't really seem 'fat' when fully dressed IYKWIM, but when you see her naked it's quite obvious that she's uhm.. bonny.
She's 135 cm tall and weighs 37 kg, so she's about half a stone overweight. The thing is though, she has been on exactly the same centiles for height and weight pretty much since birth, so what good would it do to label her as being overweight now, and make her aware of it? I already make an effort to keep her weight where it is and to ensure she gets enough exercise.
I don't really care if they do it simply to collect data, but if the children are actually told their weight and then they compare it etc., I would be very unhappy.

Ds will be starting reception in September, according to the children's BMI charts he is 'obese' - utterly bizarre really as you can clearly see his ribs and his muscles, he's obviously so not even overweight, he's just got a very muscular build.
