ORT Levels.. how do they work and what age group is an average for Level 10?

We don't really do 'ORT Levels' at dds school but she has an ORT Level 10 reading book at the mminute and I wondered (after seeing other threads on here) whether it would be an opportunity to gauge her reading 'age' iykwim

TIA

This way madness lies, you know that?

There is a list somewhere on the ORT website with suggested ages for particular levels.

If she's in Y2 she'd doing really well, if she's in Y6, she probably needs to branch out a bit. Does that help?

treetops? owls?

eh?

this is all new to me.

At dd's school they don't seem to do a particular type of book.. just a mixture of different types split into coloured bands.

Iota · 23/05/2008 10:08

I think my ds2 is on stage 7 and he is in yr1, so that makes him slap bang in the average, which is great

Enid · 23/05/2008 10:08

stage 5 is good too misdee

dd1 was only on stage 5 by the end of year one bless her

Dd is officially reading ORT 3 in her class - she is August birthday, but I happen to know (and NOT because I've been comparing ) that she's furthest on in the books (because everytime she finishes a box the teacher has to get a new one from the store). However at home she is reading level 5 fairly easily.

Ds1 is a June birthday and again a really good reader - he is Y2, at the end of reception was on Level 5-6, Y1 he really started reading 'proper' books at home, but can't remember what the levels were and at the beginning of Y2 abandoned the ORT altogether (hurray) to be a free reader, so reads what he likes. His teacher said in his SATS he was doing well on Level 3 reading.

stage 5 is year 1, term 3.

(answering myself here)

which seems great for reception, but if she had been born just ONE day earlier then she would be bang on target.

i think they go back onto ort level 11/12/13 if they need too in year 2/3

Does that mean they miss the Magic Key Enid? That happens just at the end of Stage5 doesn't it? I seem to remember ds1 got to the key glowing as his last book in reception! Btw, did you manage to get any of those Wizard Whimstaff books? We wimped out of Cribbs - dh was at work, and I couldn't face it with 3 of them, and then ds1 and dd got invited to dd's best friend for the day so there was no question really!!!!

dd1 is on level 10 and near the end of year 3. she struggles with reading though, but is progressing well at last.

I think they improve once they get onto the whole 'finding the key' thing - with the dolls house etc. Although there is a DIRE one at dd's gym, called something like the Aneena Academy, where there are hundreds of Aneena clones, and they have to find the real Aneena. It is INTERMINABLE.

Oh good enid!

Is that the pirate party one misdee? That one's really nice - I've got a gorgeous video of ds1 reading that one, because he wanted to make a 'Jackanory style programme'.

ds2 is reading about a flying boot and a green furry thing called Max [puzzled]
