Expected writing ability going into Y1?

Just wondering if anyone could tell me if this piece of writing is ok/expected for dd2 who is 5.5yrs and will be starting Y1 in September.
Dd1 loves to read/write particually writing long stories about anything and everything, her English is quite advanced. I'm trying not to compare them but I have nothing else to go on and don't know if i'm expecting to much of dd2.
Dd2 is quite reluctant to read or write, she is on stage 4 ORT books and I had to recite this piece of writing to get her to write it although she is now very proud of her work. I'm worried she might struggle with the transition from YR to Y1.
Any thoughts appreciated..

Completely fine. She is using both phonics and knowledge of more complex words in order to spell. This piece of writing is some way ahead of quite a few of DD's friends who are entering Year 2 (although some are obviously way ahead of this, as they are a year older).

Just to clarify, I'm a teacher, but haven't taught Year 1 for years.

However, DD2 was in a Year R/1 split class last year (summer born Year 1s and Autumn born Year Rs) and we get to see their writing because the prayer book gets sent home for them to write in (C of E school). I would say your DD's writing would be average among our Reception leavers, but not out of place amongst the Year 1s. Quite a few of her Year 1 friends (who are all younger, to be fair) are only just getting the hang of writing in proper sentences and having a reasonable stab at spelling.

Thanks, that's reassuring. Dd1's just finished Y1. Never saw any other childs work but she seemed to fly through books etc. It all seemed very fast paced compared to reception and worried dd1 might fall behind.

Brilliant that she can tackle longer words like "happily".

DS was an 'expected' level, borderline exceeding, and he can write a very, very simple 3 sentence story, with spelling all phonetic and 'b's substituted for 'd's etc. His teacher said the target for YR is to write a sentence - as in constructing it themselves rather than taking dictation.

did she get emerging or expected for writing?

I think if she had written that herself it would be really good but recited writing isn't surely what they are meant to do?

I would say to give your DD2 a term in year 1 and then speak to the teacher about it. The teacher will have a much better idea of your DD2s performance in the context of their cohort.

Dictation is really useful (recited writing if you like) but a child would be assessed on their ability to think of what they want to write and the ability to write.
Having said that as a Y1 teacher I wouldn't be concerned if you r daughter was in my class in September.

These threads are a little silly. In the early years a child's birthdate can have a huge affect on a child's attainment. In later years the affect of having a summer birthday is less significant.

I think that the OP dd is doing fine.

My ds is 5.2 and is at the 'expected' level. He's pretty average. He quite likes writing and will do it of his own accord. Hates reading though. Yesterday he went off and wrote:

The tee-rex has sharp teef. He likes meet. his big feet go stomp stomp stomp!

Hand writing is pretty good. He's left handed but only the g in go sad back to front. He missed a capital letter but apart from that think it's about average.
