What sort of book band would rainbow magic books be?

Just curious really! DD's just started reading them on her teacher's recommendation, but I think there's a bug difference between the books she's reading at school (ort) and the -bloody- rainbow fairies! I'm happy that the school know what they're doing, just interested to see what level she is in terms of "real" books.

I think most schools have them in book band 11. Some of them are easier to read than others, I suppose that happens because the authors vary but generally classed as 11 as far as I know. DD2 can read them and school officially have her as level 7 though so...

What level ORT are they giving her?

She's on level 5 at school atm! So a big difference if they're about level 11. I'll see what happens in Sept and possibly have a word with her new teacher if she's still "officially" so far behind. I've got this horrible nagging feeling that they've been keeping her on the same level as the rest of the top group.

When the teacher recommended the books then it sounds odd keeping her on level 5.

I personally think RM is quite non-challenging from the text so the teacher could have recommended them to help her building up stamina and learning to read silently.

Yea they're not massively challenging text wise, but there's loads for them to learn from them. It's nice to see DD wanting to do something other than watch TV! She's taking her book everywhere!

are they doing guided reading at level 5? so is she bringing home a book they are then using in her group at school? that could be why possibly.

All her school books are level5. If it was just guided reading I could understand it!

you need to think of reading scheme books as texts books with a teaching objective whereas books we read for pleasure have a very different purpose

That makes a lot of sense actually, thanks! So, whilst her decoding skills are enough for her to read RD for fun, school books will teach teach her other things (punctuation, intonation, grammar type things)? And RM type books will help her to love reading and help with comprehension? Her teacher did mention that they'd help with comprehension actually!
