Lily the lazy lion chatted to Chippy the cheeky cheetah. The useful united unicorns were using their horns to fight the furious foot soldiers. They wanted to pick the perfect powers of the unicorns horns to be royal rulers of the red fountain land. Chippy the cheeky cheetah and Lily the lazy lion saw that the useful, united unicorns were in trouble! So they pounded perfectly over to help and pounced onto furious foot soldiers. The unicorns gave them some powers as a gift.

Can't level it I'm afraid (not a teacher), but I wanted to say how much I enjoyed reading the passage - especially the pounding and pouncing! Lovely

What genre is it? It does not have structure for a story. What about the spelling and punctuation, is that all the child's own?

That's not true, Constant.
A level three should look the same whether it's from a 7 year old or 10 year old, and so on. That's why moderation across year groups is vital.

mrz I reckon it depends whether it's been written as a piece of classwork (where I'd agree with your point) or as a child just writing for pleasure and experimenting with words and sounds.

Don't know much about levels but I would guess that it is written by a bright eight year old.

The child needs to meet specific targets for it to be levelled. Otherwise, yes, it's just a bit of writing for fun but can't be levelled as they are not trying to meet any criteria.

Will have to wait for OP to come back and clarify the spelling and punctuation too.

It shows the child knows how to use alliteration, but it doesn't show much else. Very sweet though.

I'm presuming an adults typed it up and corrected some spellings.

Hi, thanks for the replies. Been busy doing bedtime! Dd is just 6 and in year 1. She has been doing alliteration and wrote this story for fun. She was v happy when she finished, doesn't usually write much at home.

I would be astounded if my dd had written this - she is 6 also. Its a gorgeous little story, I adore reading the little passages on here..so cute. The spellings are amazing also, our school is still on rain and pain etc.

Must be some bright 6 yo you have there. I'm amazed (but not a teacher though i do read a selection of paragraphs children of all ages write to see handwriting as a paeds physio- not that handwriting is my area, but close working with OT).

I'm sorry OP but I can't really believe that was written by a 6 yr old. The spelling is far too complex -it just doesn't ring true for me and I'm a literacy specialist.

Really? She was born on 23/01/08. Didn't realise it was that good! Her teacher does say she is bright and she learnt to read at 3!

Did she copy the words? Not only is the spelling unusual in it's accuracy, for her age, the words are not ones that I would expect a 6 year old to know.

Such as useful united, foot soldiers and pounded. Does she even know what foot soldiers are?

It looks like she picked words starting with the same letter from a dictionary and copied the spelling.

Did you see her write it OP?
