Am I missing something, my child is bringing home level 5 reading books, but in group reading in the class he is reading level 2? Does anyone have any ideas. This is before I speak with the teacher and ask her!

Is it exactly the same scheme? Our children choose from different schemes and they are banded together, but have different stages written on them because they are from different publishers.

Or it could be that the teacher might be using an easier text that the children won't struggle with, to practice another skill in reading - using expression is easier if you aren't having trouble with any of the words, for example.

Or they could have it wrong?

I would also suggest that they're practising different skills in guided reading. There can be a huge variation between reading schemes, especially if the school has both 'look and say' and phonetic schemes.

Is it possible that your son recognises a lot of words by sight but struggles to sound out new words, or vice versa? Something like that would explain it- but only the teacher knows his/her reasoning!

I think our school uses lower levels for guided reading, but looks at the books in a greater depth.
