Dd got level 3 in science end of year 2, end of year 3 she is a 2a. Is that common?

No, not unless she has had serious issues this year, e.g. emotionally. I would speak to the teacher. It may be a typo and be a 3A.

The trouble with the 3s they hand out end of year 2 is that they just mean they have exceeded expectation based on KS1 without actually tackling KS2 work.

The grades they give at the end of year 3 are based on how they are actually handling the work.

Damn that's useful to know. I had wondered. She is working at 3a across the rest of the curriculum so I was surprised she was a whole level behind that in science

In my experience it can happen, I've had that with DS. If they take the result of the last test he's done, and he hasn't done that well on that particular one, then it can very easily happen. No long-term damageSmile
