I've seen threads on here about reading levels, report levels etc, I don't know any of this stuff?!

I've been to parents evenings, and none of this is ever discussed, am I supposed to be doing my own research into how he's educated?

If you trust the teacher and the school, and they are giving you information in a way that makes sense, then that's totally fine.

Some parents want to dig into the detail, some don't trust the teacher, some want to compare, some get given the information in a way that doens't mean much and they feel they have to get help translating it.

I did trust the teachers. Unfortunately we live in 11+ area therefore academic obtainment is very important. Otherwise I would be happy with my dcs being average. However I think if you are in doubt just have a friendly meeting with the teachers. I believe most teachers are happy to help.

I think my DS is progressing well, he's 5 BTW so coming to end of reception. Before school, getting him to sit down and attempt to write was near impossible, now he's much more willing and coming along nicely (AFAIK!)

I've always read to him, and I am really pleased with his reading, he's on yellow labelled books, that's all I know, is that OK?

My dd is just finishing Y3 and I'm only just beginning to understand. This is only because her teacher told me she was a '3a' last parents evening earlier this year. I looked completely dumb and asked her to explain it - she drew me a chartGrin.

I've never understood reading levels as every school I know (and I visit a LOT with work) seem to use different colours. Our own school seems to use lots of different reading schemes. Dd never finished the reading levels as her teacher said she was finding the books boring so she could just read whichever book she wanted. I think this is called a 'free reader'.

Ds just did those new national phonics tests. I didn't have much of a clue about those either!

Luckily our school is one that explains most things in the report and has comprehensive numbers/results etc all clear. I do know of done schools locally to us who rarely included any numerical results in a report to the parents. Their explanation is that it causes too much competitionShock. I'm not certain they're allowed, but that's what my friends with dc's at the school say.

Anyway, I'm rambling now.

Quick google found this, which seems straightforward.

I was clueless when mine started infants - think majority of parents are. Parent/teacher/school relationship more important really. In secondary school the targets/levels become your guide as you have less contact with teachers.

Yellow is perfect for end of reception, TBH you should be told if there is a problem but if not then all should be ok.
