Target 1b what does that mean??

My dd2 finished reception with very good feedback
I have a little graph showing her as well above average in all components
I've had parents evening in yr 1 to be told she's now below average, with target of 1b for end of year
What does this actually mean??

They were quite down on her abilities tbh, and I was too upset to ask proper questions

1b is the expected level for the end of Y1, so she's not "behind" as such. I can see why this is slightly disappointing based on better than average end of Reception results though. Do remember that EYFS doesn't correlate particularly well to National Curriculum levels. Also it's quite common for children to develop in spurts rather than linearly - she may well have a great end of Y1 or Y2.

Might be worth asking if there is anything in particular you can do at home to support her.

What is the 1b in?

My DC school like kids to finish yr1 on a 1b in everything except reading which should be a 1a (to take into account the new phonics test) but tbh a child that finishes yr1 on a 1b is still more than capable of getting a 2b in yr2 so I really would not worry..

AFAIK 1b is the target, so she is expected to make the general expected progress. Not behind? Unless the individual school has set itself higher targets?

1a is the target for end of year 1 at our school. So it's only 1 sublevel behind that. Our school provides lots of great intervention for kids slightly behind where they want them to be.

below average in her class or in general on levels? I assumed 1b was quite normal for end of year 1. we are still only at Easter and it is an early Easter so next term is 14 weeks long (ish), that is still a lot of development time so she may well catch up again, and she will mature over the summer holidays so whilst not learning as such at home her ability to develop in the autumn may well suddenly seem a lot higher if that makes sense.

If you do look for workbooks it is worth finding some in real life to look at I think before just ordering them. they look very different and all cover different things in different styles. I think WHSmiths often stock some, as do Waterstones and some independent book shops. (our pound shop and 99p store do as well, I have definitely seen them) Schofield and Sims look quite good to me but it depends on your child and how they like to work. You may find some sort of 'other skill/reasoning' type book will suit her better than a straight literacy or numeracy type one.

my mum got my daughter (but sadly I have no idea where she got it from) a colouring book which is colour by sums! basically you have to solve a sum in each of the areas to get the number to be able to look in the key to find out the colour. sounds complicated but it isn't really and my 5 year old loves it because it is a bit of a challenge (her younger sister can do the colour by numbers so she wants to be a bit more grown up than her) You could make your own in just a normal colouring book. a slightly more fun way of doing a bit of maths.
