British Picture Vocabulary Scale for 6yo boy

My Y1 son is having behavioural issues in school, so much so that a week ago we had a meeting with the headmaster, his class teacher and the AEN teacher to assess the situation and try to come up with strategies to address my son's needs.

One suggestion by the AEN teacher was to assess my son using the BPVS method to try to get a better understanding as to whether he is being stretched in class.

Having done some research I am aware of what the test is but I am unsure as to whether this is the best route to go down in gauging my son's 'brightness'? How will this assessment reflect his abilities and how will they use it to ensure his learning needs are met?

It was also suggested that my son go to see the school counsellor. Yes my 6yo son needs therapy. His behaviour is so extreme, always has been a very intense little boy since he was a baby. His near-retiring Y1 teacher says that in all her years of teaching my son is a 'puzzle' to her. She says he 'astounds' her with his work and stuff he comes out with but his behaviour is difficult to control. He aced Reception and was very happy there but the transition to Y1 plus our new baby has been hard on him. Has exacerbated his moods/needs/reactions.

This has been very stressful for us (and him!). Sad

Sorry I can't offer any advice except to say that it may be better posting this in the gifted and talented board.

I would want to make sure his extreme behaviour is not down to SN like ADHD or Aspergers.

Because its very common for SN children to be labelled as naughty if they're not correctly diagnosed.

I would also expect him to be seen by an Educationsl Psychologist before he was seen by a councillor.

Is the school counsellor actually the one who will administer some of the initial ed.psych type assessments?

Hope you can get a good result sorted; my son was a nightmare in year 1, teacher wasn't so good with the whole class to be honest. Fabulous teacher in year 2 knew how to keep him busy and occupied, now in year 3 he's doing some amazing work. Still feel ill occasionally when I remember stuff from year 1.

Funny thought - when I was in year 1 I ended up being managed by being allowed to use the sewing box whenever I ran out of work to do (ie most of the time)...
