10 year old ds sad and weepy

My ten yr old ds has bouts of feeling really sad. He cries but finds it hard to articulate why he's upset. He's popular at school, sporty, lots of friends and says its nothing to do with school. He did say he worries about me (I do feel low sometimes but never in front of kids). Maybe he's picking up on my feelings? Just wanted to ask if this is normal or if I should do more?

I know he's worried about going to upper school in a few years. He hides his feelings a lot. I've planned a day out just the two of us and am hoping he will open up more. Any advice?

I think it's pretty normal in these years, going through puberty, boys hormones are just as erratic as girls. Give him all the love and support you can. Try to make sure he understands it's ok to feel sad for no reason, explain how his body will change, what it means, that it's normal to feel this way.

I use the book Sad by Michael Rosen with children who are confident enough to articulate this (I'm a teacher). I think it is healthy to recognise that it is ok to feel sad.

Thank you for the replies. I just assumed ten was far too early for hormones to be around. I'll look for the book and am going to spend some one on one time with him.

Baking - my 10 year ds has bouts of this. He's usually a happy little fella but I've noticed him getting upset easily and changing a bit.
