Nexus 7 for 10th b'day?

Ok so dd1 has best friend who got one for Xmas. This is obv a big gift, dh is all for it (milestone and all that? Don't get it personally. I am reluctant due to potential for lots of unsupervised Internet access. Please debate and discuss......

dd got her room redecorated in a more grown-up style for her 10th birthday - cost much more than a nexus 7, but would have been done anyway .. however as it was a birthday present she got to choose colour, some bits of new furniture etc and was absolutely delighted

Yes I probably would BUT I wouldn't allow lots of unsupervised net access. You can use it for plenty of stuff off line and I'd probably set up a password for the internet so they had to ask me each time.

MN probavly thinks I'm over controlling but it's only recently my 13yr old has had completely unmonitored net access (and we also have K9 on the laptops)

basildonbond I doesn't have to be an ever upward spiral re pressie costs. Ours haven't. THe bigger 2 have netbooks. THey haven't had anything that expensive since at that was at age 15 (dd1 maybe will be needing a new one soon - its nearly 4yrs old and she works it to death at uni!)

My 8 (now 9) year old and 12 year old both got one for Xmas, they are fantastic! The 9 yr old uses it for game playing, loads of freebies can be downloaded, 12 yr old plays games but uses it loads for school work, research etc, Facebook and downloads Kindle books. Worth every penny. Entertains them for hours on car journeys, hanging around for siblings at clubs etc. She doesn't spend much time in the Internet, although is able to do so, this is not a problem. They need to learn and have the freedom to learn!

My 9 & 10yo dds got them for Christmas. We haven't given them the network key to our wifi and they dont have 3G. We have downloaded any free apps they wanted and taken out of their pocket money any paid apps.

TBH they spend all their time on temple run and fruit ninja and the kindle app. If they are sitting in the sitting room we turn on the wifi for them. This means unlimited baby monkey, baby monkey, riding in a piiiig baby monkey....

Our 11 year old has a cheaper version of my nexus 7. There are a couple of apps I have found useful.

Kids Place. you can set this to automatically load when they switch on, they can only access apps and functions through this app. You can control what they can access with a password.

Safe app lock, I use a different password and have locked out anything I don't want DS to use.

I have also locked the normal browsing function and have downloaded one called 'safe browser' which does what it says on the tin.

All the apps were free when I downloaded them.
