lots of pre schools take children from 2.5 and nurserys from the term after 3rd birthday. You don't have to send him to school until the term after he is 5. If you want him to go to a pre school or nursery then you can find a list on www.parentcentre.gov.uk.

For preschool and nursery then you contact them directly (I think). For proper school you need to fill in a form and send it to the local authority in the autumn before the Sept that he will start. This will be next autumn for you. (the deadline for starting in Sept 2008 is this Fri)

Professorplum, can you explain for me? My dd's birthday is end of July, could I keep her out of school until the next September, making her the eldest in the year rather then the youngest? Is this right?

I thought she would have to sart at Easter when she was still 4

They don't have to start legally until the term after they are 5 but in the appropriate year group so the eldest is always Sept born and the youngest Aug. The school doesn't have to keep the place open either so in an oversubsribed school the place would be offered to someone who wanted to start earlier. If your child is summer born and you want then to start the September after they turn 5, then they will start in Year 1 and miss reception. I think.

School term after your child's 3rd Birthday is when you are entitled to 5 2.5 hr government funded pre-school/nursery sessions.

DS has been on the waiting list for ours since he was about 18m, new baby will go on as soon as it's born! It's a really popular pre-school and has just got double outstanding in its OFSTED so competition is only going to get fiercer!
