Writing homework from (US) preschool

DS1 (3.7) was sent home with some sheets of paper today to practice writing the letters of his name on. I have noticed in the past that the teachers write the children's names using capital letters but haven't said anything. The letters on his homework today are again all capital letters. Do I say something or not? Teachers advice particularly welcome here

I am a teacher! (Or was)

I think it might be an idea to ask the teacher if there is a reason they are all in capitals. Is that something they are working on? I think it would be odd to do that before he can write his name 'properly'

You could also print out your own sheets so he could work on them at home. If you google 'handwriting' I think it should come up with something. There was a recent thread about this - I'll se if I can find it...

I asked about this when we were in the US - explained that we always use lower case because it is easier to differentiate between letters, but I just got a 'huh' in return.

I was a teacher a very long time ago - and my advice? Don't do it. He's 3.7 - he shouldn't be doing homework, capitals or lower case!

That's the thing Califrau, it probably wouldn't do any good, especially judging by ScaryScienceT's post!

Thanks for all of your posts. I don't think I can get away with ignoring the homework completely. DS1 has hardly even held a pencil before let alone written letters so this is not a natural progression. Thanks for the links OverRated, I may print something out from there and take that in instead.

But he's 3.7 - he shouldn't be writing letters! Unless he really really wants to, that it!

That's funny (strange, not ha-ha). I was encouraged for ds1 to learn small letters early on as they would start using both in pre-school. Personally at the pre-k 3 level I wouldn't fret about it. I feel sure they will move on in pre-k 4. If not, then would be the time to question, imo.
