Anyone know how do the teachers score the nursery children?

he teacher at DD's nursery told us in parents evening that they score the children as they go into the year and then again when they leave in the summer.

What exactly do they score them on though? Is there a specific set of things they look for?

I've had 3 kids in nursery and have never heard of thsi. must be secret scoring....

Never heard of scroing, but I know that they do foundation stage stepping stones which are like scoring I suppose

It is part of the Early Years curriculum assessments which have targets from aged 3 all the way to end of Reception Year, in 6 areas of development. I know, but the sad thing is that I was so curious to see what she had scored but the teacher didnt say.

Is it really so depressing if the scores are there to help the children develop by identifying potential problems?? It's not like they're streaming them for maths or anything. Without checking Lizs' link, IIRC the foundation stage stuff is fairly basic anyway, all about awareness of surroundings and being able to do buttons up and stuff.

I don't think preschools "score" children as such, but they do observe and make notes so that you and they have a record of their progress for when they start school. At our preschool each child has a booklet called "My Learning Story" and the teachers write down their observations of what the children do and say under the main headings of the preschool curriculum. Things like, recording that your child said "I've got 2 pebbles" is evidence that they can count, or "Frogs are green and they go ribbit ribbit" goes under the heading "Understanding the world". There are other subjects such as "Being healthy" and "Making friends". Under "Being healthy" they woudl record things like whether your child washes their hands before eating. But the note taking isn't to give them marks but so they can be seen to actually get something from preschool, even if it's "just" how to make friends. Hope this helps.
