My 3yr old is in his pre school year,he is very clever, enjoys all aspects of nursery life but Ijust don't think he is emotionally ready for school.Nursery are leaving all decisions to us. Would appreciate any deferrment stories and advice from anyone in same situation.

My friend has a summer baby who was due to start school in Sept but they have deferred until Easter (so 2 terms). It required a bit of argument with the school head but he acquiesed. They already have 1 DC in the same school and the class sizes are small so there was no concern about not getting a place.

Would you still get a place in the school you want if you chose to start later?

One of our pre-sch teachers sent two of her DCs late, she says it was highly beneficial for those particular children and both soon made friends, settled into the routine and caught up with the work by Year 1.

I have a 3yo summer baby who is ready to start school next September. A lot can change in a year so perhaps keep your options open awhile longer?

Thanks for comments. In answer, yes we will have a place guarenteed, we also have a guarenteed nursery place next year. His key worker deferred her oldest child and her experience was positive.I also spoke with a teacher friend who advised a defferment as she said they never get back what they loose in p1.
