Play being sidelines in UK nurseries- Government shifts towards more formal learning.

Shocked & heartbroken with this news today www.bbc.co.uk/news/education-23033496

After hearing the uninformed witherings of the accountant trained education minister Lizz Truss about wanting Uk nurseries to become more like the formal French model (which has children sitting quietly at desks doing worksheets) I knew something bad was in the pipeline- but this takes the cake.

Very sad day for UK children, would be very keen to hear what parents have to say about it.

The Department for Education has been consulting on two new flagship qualifications, the Early Years Educator (EYE) and the Early Years Teacher (EYT), designed to increase the skills of those working with babies and young children. They will be required by nurseries in England from September 2014
The Gvmt has been doing it's darnest to break up LAs, who, up until now, have provided this exact service. In our LA, the EYs Teacher SErvices has been torn apart and no longer exists . I just don't follow their thinking - do they want graduate input into Early Years, or not ?

What they want seems very unclear! The 2012 EYFS reviews were very good- focusing more on 'Characteristics of effective learning' -thinking creatively & critically, encouraging adults to plan play opportunities that promote problem solving etc... Now that seems to be thrown out the window? Very worrying for those of us trying to do our best for the children in our care.
