What to do if we're not going to get into the French Lycee or a French school

I wondered if anyone could share their experience of trying to get their children into the French education system in London? If you didn't get a place at the French Lycee or one of its 'annexes' (Wix, etc) or at one of the schools that are 'homologuees' such as L'Ecole de Battersea, Ecole des Petits, etc what options did you look at and what options do you know of will lead onto a later entry into the system? I would be particularly interested to hear from people who were turned down for entry into maternelle at L'Ecole des Petits but managed to get in at a later stage?
