highchair recommendations for small babies

Hi all

I am hoping someone can give me some advice as my google search for highchairs best suited for small/prem babies has yielded a blank! My LO is now over 8.5 months (a little under 7 months actual) and weighs about 13.5-14lb I think. We started weaning her at a little over 6 months actual and she is now quite keen. So far we have been sitting her in her baby bjorn bouncer as she has been too little for the highchair and we couldn't make the straps small enough. She is now at the stage of wanting finger foods and is too strong for the bouncer (she strains forward) but the highchair we have for DD1 is no good for DD2 as the tray sits at the height of Heidi's chin so she has no hope of seeing anything on it, let alone reaching it. This highchair also won't sit in close enough to our kitchen table to allow her to reach this either. Can anyone recommend a highchair which suits a smaller baby - either with a lower tray or that sits in snug to a normal table to allow her to reach?

Thanks

Fiona

I have a First Years reclining booster seat.

It straps onto a chair. The seat has two levels. You can use it with the tray, or put on a tallish chair and push into the table.

We needed it reclining as neither of my prem babies could sit up till they were nearly 8 months. But you can put it fully upright.

You want an Ikea Antilop with the inflatable cushion. You can use it with the tray, or snug upto the table. If she needs a little more height, you can put a cushion under her for a little more height.

Nice and cheap too - and best of all is super easy to clean

The IKEA antilop is quite good in general and is not that large. You can also buy a blow up padded part separately that is good for younger babies - it also pushes them towards the tray (which is not high). It is a good height for putting against the kitchen table too (both with or without tray). My DD aged 6 months has been sitting in it since about 5 1/2 months - not quite started weaning yet but it is handy for keeping her happy and close by when I am cooking . She is about 15 1/2 lbs I think.

have a look at the ikea antilop, it's cheap, bucket-shaped and has a booster cushion and can also go up to the table. plus, if you hate it you can give it away without feeling like you've spent a fortune. i'm going to be weaning my dd2 in a while, she's a teeny one too, so report back if you find something great, will you?

another recommendation for the ikea antilop... strap can be adjusted to as small as you like

My lo is 20mths and weighs 16lb the highchair we use is the mammas and pappas prima pappa one. We do have to use reins rather than the straps cos they are still too big and also we use a big duster which she sits on and it raises her up but because of the bar were the crotch strap goes it does help to keep her in iykwim. I di have a pic on profile before of the said duster lol cost £1 and is well worth it.

The ikea one has been fab for my little DD, had the blow up it to start with and was great!

Another advocate of the Ikea Antilop here. DD has been using it since she was 7mths old and weighing around 9/10lb

I find that smaller babies tend to struggle with the larger padded highchairs, DD tends to get lost in them and I find that they all recline which I find isn't that conducive to eating!

My 28 weeker is most comfortable in the Ikea highchair. However, he is a wriggler so I have attached the harness from reins around the legs so that he is properly strapped in (not as cruel as it sounds!!) as the chair's own strap is pretty useless if your baby wants to escape.

Antilop with a cushion stuffed down behind her - we had the reclining booster and it was useful for when she was tiny but wanted to sit at the table with us, but no good for acxtually eating in.

P&T high pod, Mutsy Easy grow highchair, M&P cuisine and the Babylo Mandy and East Coast Sit Up (last 2 are discontinued though so you'd have to look on Ebay). The phil and ted's table top ones are good for taking places and if you haven't got much space.

Do you have a bumbo seat? If so, you can now get a little table that attaches to it (£9.99 from bumpto3). This would prob tide you over until dd is bigger.

If you don't have a bumbo then I'd prob go to Ikea!

Wow, sounds like a resounding recommendation for the Ikea antilop! Will have to brave the chaos of Ikea this weekend then I think. Thanks very much to all of you for your advice.

I had a very diddy baby too and she sat in a bumbo until she could comfortably sit in a tripp trapp. Used it til she was about 10 months.

My ds was 13.12 lbs at 8.5 months and we used this one. The straps can be adjusted for a good fit. Also very portable so able to take it to friends (who all seemed to have bigger high chairs that were too big for ds).
