Bit Worried - too much sleep?

Hi All...

wonder if anyone can offer some advice.

My DS is 17.5 months actual (14.5 months corrected).

I'm quite worried about him because he still sleeps a lot. He's constantly got black rings under his eyes and is often tired after being up for just 2 hours.

He has 12 hours a night, and then a 2-3 hour nap in the afternoon. But it never seems quite enough. But after a 3 hour nap in the middle of the day if I put him down for a nap again at 3/4pm he's not ready for bed at 6/7pm again.

Last night he slept for 15 hours and still had a 1.5 hr nap. He was exhausted again 2 hours later and zonked out for a 6:30 bed time.

I'm worried there might be something wrong with him (anaemic?). And that with all that sleep he's missing out on being awake and learning stuff.

Does anyone else have this problem?

We're seeing the consultant for an out-patient check-up on the 30th... should I wait or go to GP sooner?

Hey, my ds was born at 31 weeks and always slept much more than others of the same age, he was on 2 lots of 2 hour naps +12 hours at night until at least 18m but if it's worrying you definitely see gp if only to put your mind at rest!xx

Thanks tiredoftrains.

It's really good to know it's not just my DS. Maybe I just need to let him sleep more.

There just doesn't seem to be enough time in the day for more sleep though!

By the time we're all up and fed and washed and dressed it's 9/10am ish. He'll then sleep 'til lunch time, usually 3 hours. I stopped putting him down in the afternoon because if he sleeps past 4pm he won't then sleep at 6:30ish.

Maybe I just need to get my arse in to gear and speed up the necessary stuff and stop sifting around in our pyjamas so he's got time for some quality awake time and more sleep.

God. I feel terrible. off to beat myself with a stick for being such a crap mum

No beating with sticks allowed, nothing better than pyjama time!

Hi trains

My twins were born at 34 weeks so not that prem but they sleep a lot too (nearly 11 months old now).

Usually 13.5 hours at night, 2 hours in the afternoon and 30 minutes in the morning (they would sleep longer in the morning if I let them). It worried me to for a while but have just decided to accept that they sleep well and let them carry on getting all the sleep they must need.

If you are worried about iron deficiency just mention it to your GP, no hard done.
