My DSis has gone into labour at 31 weeks with DC3. Her DS was 2 weeks late and induced and her DD was 12 days late. Does this mean it is likely to be a problem with the baby making him/her early this time?

Not a huge amount is known about the causes of early labour, although it is occasionally associated with infection.
At 31 weeks baby will need to spend a few weeks in SCBU. To start he/she may need support with breathing. Will have a course of antibiotics. Will need to gradually learn how to feed.
Hope everything goes well.

Not necessarily, my SIL had my niece, her dc5 at 30 weeks. DN was tiny, but a fighter and is now 3. They discovered during the EMCS that her bladder and uterus had adhesed and her uterus couldn't expand, hence prem labour.

Not necessarily, each situation is different, I had identical twins who arrived at 34 weeks, and hey are totally fine. 31 weeks is still a good gestation, I hope you can sleep and try not to worry. Best wishes for your sister and the new baby Thanks

Thank you for your replies, she's had a steroid injection, and they are giving her another one in 12 hours if he/she hasn't been born.
Are premature labours usually faster than full term? she had very long labours with first 2.

my eldest was 31 weeks, she was and is fine, no steroids. I can't tell you the difference though because all mine were impatient. I do go very fast though and you don't know that anything is happening until I transition so I tend to spend a lot of time in the hospital because I contact for weeks so they're kind of on alert with me.

anyway, if she's had a positive fibronectin (swab from the cervix with no lube Confused ) which will be why she's having steroids and nifedipine (to slow her down) they are expecting baby to come this week. There's no such thing as stopping labour, they just give enough time to get them steroids in! I managed midnight Tuesday to Friday afternoon in December which is the longest I've gone.

just to say, baby may well surprise you. my 29 weeker didn't need ventilating, he was the loudest of my babies at birth! Grin my 31 weeker had a couple of hours to slow her breathing down, she had 10 days in the unit, a week in nursery and a week on the ward with me. if it's just labour then baby has a good chanceSmile

My 31 week I'd twins spent 12hrs on cpap, no ventilation. I did have the steroids. 6 weeks in SCBU and they're two now and you would never know they were so prem.

My labour at 33 weeks was 47 mins. I too had the steroids as waters broke 2 days before and Ds needed no help with breathing. He was ok just needed to grow. Spent 2 weeks in scbu he's now 16 weeks and over 10lbs x

My 31 weeker (DS3) was born by emcs as they couldn't slow my labour down. I didn't have steroids (though DS had them shortly after he was born) and DS3 spent 2 weeks on full cpap and a week with it occasionally. He was in scbu for 5.5 weeks and has no problems. He's now 4.5 months actual age.and you'd never guess he was premature really as he's over 6kg Smile
