Had a scare today, started to bleed

i was at work and felt a sudden gush, went to the loo and found id started to bleed, blood was brown. I panicked i'll admit and thought the worst, im 14 weeks pregnant. I went straight home and rang the midwife who told me to go to A&E, well spent a couple of hours waiting there and was sent to have a scan. Everything is fine the babys heart is beating and baby is kicking about, so very relieved. Im still have quite a bit of pain period like, but no more bleeding, this is my 5th baby and ive never had bleeding in pregnancy before so was very worried. The doctor didnt really give me a reason why this happens so still not sure, but just resting this weekend, not going into work as i was suppose to be working all weekend. Hopefully this wont happen again !!The sonographer did say the placenta was low so this could be the reason, but went on to say it usually is at this stage?

Oh, you poor thing - that must have been terrifying - thank goodness all is fine. I don't know what all the causes are for bleeding in pregnancy but I do know it happens to a lot of people. Take it easy and if you're worried at all ring the hospital any time. xx

I had bleeding every couple of weeks throughout the first 2 trimesters, both red and brown. Hopefully this won't happen to you as it's a pain having to go up and down to the hospital all the time. I never really got a satisfactory explanation for it. Anyway I had a healthy baby at the end of it.

The good thing is you've been checked out and you know everything is fine. Just relax and enjoy the weekend. Congratulations and good luck!

Well firstly, thank god the baby is ok! And you did exactly the right thing!

I had 3 miscarriages prior to this PG (now 38 weeks) and when I began to bleed at 13 weeks with this one I was terrified...and on holiday in Spain so had to go to a Spanish hospital .

I was told when I went for a repeat scn back in the UK that it was possibly any of the following:

old blood that the uterus had retained from implantation bleeding

a lesion on my cervix as the whole area is prone to bleed a little during PG

blood from my urethra if I've had a UTI and not noticed (!)

In any case I was told that as long as the baby is ok on the scan and the blood is brown, not to worry. But if the blood turns red, get back in asap! I have had spotting on and off through the whole of my pregnancy and there has been no explanation.

The only thing I would say is, if you have ANY worries get advice or get checked and don't feel bad about asking! Thats what they're there for. Good luck!

thanks everyone for your replies, i havent had any more bleeding but still have period like pains and my stomach feels very tight like when it is contracting & back ache, i thought i had a urine infection at the beginging of the week and went to the doctors he sent it off to be tested as he couldnt find anything when he tested it at the surgery, but when i phoned for the results today they said it was all clear so that counts that out. Any way im hoping to pains subside soon because its still a worry all the time im having them.

I would ring for some advice if I were you.

Whilst some degree of aches and pains are normal (ligaments stretching etc - really sore sometimes!) I would just check about the stinging.

It could be something completely pregnancy unrelated but they could maybe do a swab just to rule out a possible infection?

The best port of call is either a sympathetic Midwife or GP.

Good luck x
