i can use ventolin while pg, can't i?

i have an irritating cough that is agravatingmy morning (all day) sickness ,and my chest feels tight. Am i ok to use a bit of ventolin to give me a break from coughing? It'd only be a couple of puffs.

Yes...almost certain you can.

There were people on a ward with me using it. That is the classic blue inhaler isn't it?

Yes, inhaled ventolin is fine. Keep an eye on the asthma - sometimes it can get worse in pregnancy and it's important for it to be as well controlled as poss. So if the chestiness persists, do see your doc. Almost all asthma medication is completely fine in pregnancy.

Yes, you can. In fact, if you're wheezy, you've got to use ventolin, the baby needs oxygen too. (Have you had ventolin before?)

Hi Olivo, I'm the same boat, 12 weeks pg and a hacking cough 2 weeks after having started a cold. I'm thinking my cough is now asthma related as the cold virus should have gone and am puffing away on the ventolin. I'm wondering whether I need to start the brown inhaler (preventative one) rather than using the blue one all the time...only thing is I need to go to the dr to get one of these. Anyway it is safe, my midwide confirmed this.
Hope you feel better soon. Coughing makes me feel sick too

ah taleof2, sounds similar, my sympathies to you - my cold is starting to clear but my cough is still there. NQC, yes , i have blue and brown inhalers but don't use them all the time, usually just when i have a cold or chest infection.
will try a little tonight; am only 9+ weeks and was hping to not use anythi ng till past twleve bit you're right, the baby needs his air too.

Just checked on the ventolin and the max on my inhaler is 8 puffs a day. I think I've been taking more than this so now am a bit worried. May need to get down the Drs tomorrow. This asthmatic cough crept up on me, I keep inhalers on stand-by but normally don't need to take them...

I don't think 8 puffs of ventolin will do any harm - but that is a lot of ventolin. You probably need to have a brown inhaler to use at times like this.

8 puffs of ventolin is not a problem from an overdose point of view - a nebuliser is IIRC 50 puffs of an inhaler and you can have two in a row if necessary (even in pg).

HOWEVER what it means is your asthma is not good and needs to be brought under control.

I forgot my inhalers so the Registrar on the delivery suite wrote me a prescription a few hours before I went into labor...

So, guess it's OK

taleof2, you sould get it checked out, does sound like you need the brown one. i have had a couple of puffs and feel better so will continue to use it till this cough disappears. sse you on the antenatal - i do pop on there when i have time but it moves so fast, i can't keep up. am also so far behind everyone else, it can remind me of how far i have to go!
