I'm 36 weeks pregnant and recently have been getting horrible pins and needles in my hands in the middle of the night...they don't go away like regular pins and needles and seem to travel to my elbows....I'm knackered as I'm waking to pee anyway and now I'm waking constantly from pins and needles...I think that it is called 'Carpol Tunnel Syndrome'..have had normal pregnancy so far..any advice on how to get rid of the pins and needles would be brilliant!!!

I know it sounds really trivial but they are very painful....

Could you not get some wrist/hand splints for when you're sleeping at night?

I guess so, do you know if they work? Can the midwife give them to me?..

I had this, and it deffo called Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. I went to my doctors and she told me to go to the orthotics clinic at my local hospital and they game me splints to wear. Its so frustrating isn't it but apparently it occurs quite commonly in pregnancy.

I get this too. Try not sleeping on your arms , keeping them out in front of you instead. Uncomfortable though, I know.

Its my left hand!

I called the mid wife this morning and she just said that it was normal and not to worry - I said ok, but is there anything I can do?! She mentioned massage, I'll try that tonight...I've gone and bought a wrist splint online - as people have mentioned they help, hopefully it will arrive tomorrow so will see if it works....

I had this and ignored it for a while but do a lot of typing and work and it ended up with shooting pains. As it was so long to the midwife appointment I went to see the Dr. who prescribed a anti inflamatory gel to rub on my wrist - it is brilliant, I only use at work as it led me to over use and afterwards for worse but it means you will get sleep

It is carpal tunnel & the only time they will go away is after you have baby! It it caused by water retention making your everything bigger, therefore pinching your nerves.

It is very painful, I sympathise! I had it so bad that I would wake crying. I couldn't wait not to be pregnant! After a while the pain went & instead I lost all feeling in my thumb on one hand for weeks. I couldn't grip anything with my left hand.

Keep your hands as warm as possible. Keep them as straight as possible & below your head, so no sleeping with them under pillows. Keep them flat, so make sure your hands 7 wrists are level when you sleep.

Don't expect them to be better the second you give birth, mine took between 3-5 days [can't remember exactly, but knew I didn't have them when I got home & I was in hosp 5 days]

I didn't do the splint thing, I had tubigrip that I used at night, which helped a bit.

I will say tho, that I had tingling for ages after & still feel a little discomfort even now if my thumbs get too cold. Dd2 is 6 months old.
