Low risk result on nuchal & bloods but I'm still so worried - was anyone else like this?

I've had the results of my nuchal scan combined with blood test, which gives me a risk of 1:2638. I'm 39 and still will be when the baby is due. With my first (at 37), I just knew as soon as I had a low risk result (about 1:2900) that I didn't want to have any further testing and I sort of assumed I'd feel the same again in that I would KNOW one way or another whether to have an amnio.

I wasn't expecting to feel so up and down and completely undecided. It is really affecting me. I feel ashamed, as I have read other threads on here where mums-to-be are coping with much higher risks and yet I don't seem to be at all.

Has anyone else felt like this? I would really appreciate hearing from anyone who has been or is in this position.

Will you be having detailed scans? If you want an amnio then ask your doc about the risks & weight them against the stress reduction on knowing everything is ok.

When I had my low risk results back I was anxious to know what they meant and how low risk they actually were, it helped to know that my friend who has a perfectly healthy baby girl had a low risk result of 1 in 2000ish(can't remember exact number but it was less than yours and she was only 20 at the time.)When I asked on here earlier on in my pregnancy somebody posted the average results for people of each age group and i'm certain than your result is better than the average for a 25 year old. You need to remember that none of the tests they offer are conclusive. If you are really worried then of course have further tests but I'm sure everything will be fine the fact that your result was better the last time has prob just thrown you but try not to worry. I do know that high risk is anything up to 250 and you are way off that. I found these points reassuring, I hope they help you.

We had a low-risk nuchal scan, and my maternal serum screen came back with a 1 in 84 risk for a DS baby... gah, that was awful. So we had an amnio sort of on an emergency basis, and it came out fine. (In other words, the serum screen was a false positive.) I'm 39, too.
Personally, I don't know which way I'd go if I had to do it over again... we really needed to know if there was a problem with the baby, for our own peace of mind, and the amnio really wasn't that bad - BUT, it does carry with it a risk of 1:200 of miscarriage. We felt that the triple screen result justified the risk... but I think it depends on what you'd do if you had a bad result on amnio.
While we were waiting for our amnio result, the thing that we read the most was that the nuchal scan result was much more predictive for DS than a triple screen. That made me wish I'd never had the triple screen!!
I'm sorry, this probably is more rambling than helpful... I feel for you, though - good luck!!

The thing I always think about is what I would about the results if I had an amnio. In my case the answer is nothing, so what is the point in having it? Yes it will tell you definitely one way or the other, but there are all sorts of things it won't tell you about that you won't know until your DC is born or even several years after. Having been through a MC, for me 1:200 risk is far too high an odds against your 1:2900 odds of Downs.
Obviously it's a very personal thing.

Such a personal thing I agree - I had my first at 37 and my second at 39 (just) and have just turned 40.

I had a high result for my first - 1:50, had a CVS, didn't really consider not having one and had thoroughly thought out what I would do in the event it showed up any abnormalilities. It was all fine. For my second I had a much lower result (similiar to yours Hoobs I recall) - however a combination of having assumed I'd get another high result, me being a natural born worrier and a sense that as I'd had one for my first I should do the same for my second (which is prob totally irrational) - I opted for an amnio. It was all fine.

I felt like i was in good hands for the procedure, so the risk of MC was only ever at the back of my mind.

Don't feel ashamed - think it over and do what you think is best.

maybe you need to talk to someone about your fears, some sort of counselling. I think its natural to worry but that really is a very low risk. And haveing a disabled child isn't the end of the universe either.

I had my second child at 40 and had a 1:2 risk of Downs based on the nuchal fold test. The CVS we had confirmed that she had no chromosomal abnormalities so against those odds, our daughter was fine. She's 4 now and absolutely normal. I personally wouldn't worry at all. I'd have been delighted with your results! HTH.

Fear never goes away as a parent though does it. Whether its Downs or birth trauma. Running across roads. Swallowing bleach.
I was over the moon at 1/4000 I'm 36. There will be so many things to get concerned about in the future I would switch off and focus on the 2637/2638 that your baby will not have Downs - really excellent odds.

After reading this I am worried now. I am 32 and my results came back at 1:450

Is this pretty high for a 32 year old?
