Vegetarian with fishy urges

I am having weird cravings for fish and chips in this pregnancy and it is driving me nuts!!! I have been veggie for nearly 20 yars so the thought of eating fish now is appalling

What is a good substitute for Cod and chips? How have other veggies coped with these sort of yearnings???

I had these sorts of yearnings about eight years ago (been veggie 20 years). I coped by giving in and eating a great big plate of fish

ive been veggie fo rover 20 + yrs and got cravings for meat ,it was awful, i would wake up from a dream of devouring a steak and feel sick !!!..its your iron levels i think, your body is asking for iron rich foods, take some spatone[two sachets a day when pregnant] its easy on the stomach and doesnt make you constipated like the iron tablets the dr gives you

agree with meg
i was veggie for long time and but in japan couldnt resist sushi, cultural food research
i really love fish now (though have not and will not eat meat)

and i also felt in pregnancy that your body tells you what it wants
it depends on your reasons for being veggie too

there is no substitute for it.. cod n chips i mean..

Total opposite - i am and always was a total carnivore but when i was pregnant with both DSs i totally went off meat (retched at the thought).

Since then - whenever i have an upset stomach i go off meat. Never happened before.

I have to admit loving a plate of battered fish and chips at Harry Ramsdens as a child.

Thank you for sympathy - I am not sure I can bring myself to do it - surely the result would be indigestion ...?

though to be honest the result of most things i eat is indigestion!

I am going to try Spatone though - thank you bambi.

I had scampi fries crisps - but I don't know what fish tastes like as I haven't eaten it for over 20 years!

normally cravings are the bodys way of tellling us it is lacking something. you probably need to eat more omega 3 and protein, if you want the fish taste then waitrose and holland and barratt do some nice fishless fish fingers, had some last night!

I was veggie for 15 years before I was pregnant with my DS. I had the worst meat cravings ever-I even dreamed about McDonalds!

I gave into eating more fish and that seemed to help (particularly the odd tuna steak) . Breastfeeding made it worse and I cracked one day and ordered a steak in a pub . These days I can't call myself veggie anymore as with this pregnancy it has got even worse!!

and surprisingly I wasn't ill afterwards!

I was a veggie, but couldn't resist fish and chips when I was pregnant with DD. Then, when pregnanat with DS, I craved a bacon sandwich so badly I went out in my lunchbreak from work and got a huge bread bun with bacon and mushrooms. Yum. But it only took one bite to put me off again. It was like chewing someone's overcooked ear lobe [boak]

I am veggie and when I found out I was pregnant got paranoid that I wasn't getting enough protein and had some roast chicken. The next day awful ms started and a week after that I was in hospital with hyoperemisis. I'm not convinced that the chicken and the hyperemisis are unconnected !

That was my first and only foray into meat for 20 years or so. Dabble with fish finger sandwhiches though. Also prawns.

A friend of mine was vege and craved roast beef and steak when pg. She's never looked back!

Sometimes its your bodies way of telling you it needs something.

If you can ignore the urge then great.....if not, well..... I'd be off to the chippy

I first realised I was pregnant wth DS2 when I really fancied a pork pie...

I craved meat all through the my first 2 pregnancies - very odd

I fancied fish when pregnant despite being veggie for nearly 20 yrs.

The cravings were only fleeting so I never gave in to them.

They were very specific cravings though -I wanted white, flakey fish (you know the sort, big flakes of fish, the sort they show on photos of recipes).

Mind you when pregnant, particularly during first 4 months with morning sickness, when I wanted something to eat it had to be exactly what I wanted, there and then otherwise you could forget it.

I went to the chip shop and ordered cheese and onion pie and chips with curry sauce. That way, you get a chippy tea and some of the craving is satisfied. It wasn't exactly what I wanted, but it felt better than ignoring my principles.

Have also craved meat, but Linda McCartney has saved my bacon iyswim.

Hi, I had these cravings when pg with DTs, gave in to them! Had fish and chips maybe once a week. I felt like I must really need the protein, as growing 2 babies, and while I don't think it's great eating fish, am not a bothered by that as other creatures (mammals) kept inhumanely. No problem stopping when they were born, but ate a lot or mars bars!

ScarletA · 16/05/2008 15:08

I was totally the opposite to you proper veggies when I was pg. I haven't eaten meat since 16 but have eaten fish for last 10 or so years. However the thought of it while pg made me want to puke. All I wanted to eat was really super healthy veggie food - raw carrots and seeds and nuts and stuff like that.
