Loss of appetite

Does anyone have any tips for coping with loss of appetite? I'm just over 8 weeks, and have gone from liking my food (ahem!) to not being able to finish even small portions of food. As a result of eating less, I'm getting really hungry, but as soon as I start eating I feel full and bloated. Hmm. Any tips?

I found eating little and often really helped, every two hours in fact. I kept dry crackers on my desk along with other bits and bobs i could stomach. I'm 10w +3 now and had the exact same as you - was really hungry but filled up very quick. It passed for me at 9w+ 5 so i'm starting to enjoy food again (lots of it)

Also, try eating late at night which helps with the hunger pangs in the night!! Good luck, it will pass soon x

I had this through my last pregnancy with lots of hassle from the midwife about weight gain.

All I can say is if there is something you do like, then eat it. Don't worry too much about the nutritional content.

I'm 9 weeks +3 and am having a similar thing. I've gone off loads of foods although I still feel hungry all the time and have to eat. Food has become fuel rather than a pleasure. It's really annoying!

Also I'm getting very bloated and, um, windy! Can't wait until food becomes a simple, enjoyable thing again.

Digestive biscuits and cheese sandwiches are working for me at the moment! I make a stack of sandwiches in the morning and nibble on them through the day.

MildWest, are you constipated at all? I haven't had morning sickness but have been shockingly constipated (sorry), and I find that a lot of the time I've no appetite either - it feels like there's no room in my digestive system for new food as it is taking so long to process the stuff that's in there.

Oh, and congratulations btw

I ate like a horse till about 10 weeks the just could face anything. I was either feeling sick , being sick or just had no appitite. DS due in two weeks and appite not returned at all, was sick and tired of people say i was loosing weight. I did add aabout 10 kg in the first 10 weesk and i think this was my reserve. Not lost since just not gain and baby is very big so must be doing ok. I eat what i fancy, when i fancy it and try not to get to the dizzy sick point.
It will pass. just maybe after the baby. total contrast to DD who gave me the food needs of a horse. put on 20 kg.. and it stayed...

I had loss of appetite throughout most of my pregnancy, particularly up to about 30 weeks (Im 35 weeks now). in fact at 28 weeks I weighed a stone lighter than I did before I became pregnant. My midwife said not to worry about it as baby will get the nutrients he needs. I found that when I really couldn't stomach food, which was most of the time, a glass of full cream milk helped take away any hunger pangs.

I had the same lack of appetite from when I found out (at 6 weeks). I didn't want to eat anything and when I did eat I could only manage small portions. I am now 10 weeks and 4 days and my appetite is slowly returning and I want food now, although still having smallish portions.

Just try and eat little and often rather than 3 big meals a day. And don't worry, I understand the baby will get what it needs from what you eat, and at the moment its only the size of a peanut so it can't need too much!! ;)

Hi! I'm still struggling with nausea, actual sickness and loss of appetite at 17 weeks. Wish it would get better as pretty fed up now. Agree with Votadina- just eat when you can and what you can and always whatever you fell like. Good luck.

To Nad1
I was exactly the same as you- still not great at 18 weeks but things are improving. Just keep drinking fluids- whatever you feel like and eat little bits as, even though you won;t feel like it, it does help reduce nausea. I found drinking lemon squash and eating grapes helped (small and juicy, more like a drink than food!). The cooking smells- just avoid as much as possible. My poor husband is living on microwave meals because I feel so sick with cooking smells still. Just do exactly as you feel. Hope you feel better soon.
