Is it safe to get my hair died at 37 weeks?

Hi,

Strange as it may seem, I was just wondering whether it is okay to have hair dyed in a salon at 37 weeks or would chemicals get to the baby?

There is research that suggests this to be a very bad idea. Sorry can't find the details. Please don't do it.. Could you just have a nice haircut instead?

I wouldn't do it- waste of time and money as your hormones will effect the process and it could end up looking bad.

Hi,

I've heard the opposite- from various people- that it's absolutely fine to do so... but probably it might be a good idea to use vegetable dye or to do highlights. I do agree though that at this late stage in pregnancy it would probably be a safer bet if you chose a colour quite close to your natural one...

Vegtable dyes are not permanent and will not enter the cortex, highlights are basic bleach - strip out the colour not put colour in so will not matter - although then from a saftey issue I am not sure about bleach and saftey when pg?

My doc and hairdresser told me foil/wrap highlights were OK since they don't touch the scalp. My hairdresser's had 3 mc so I am confident in her. Had highlights last week , at 14 weeks.

Pelafina. I realise that is the case and am frantically looking for the advise. It was actually a friend whose wife is a biochemist who told me this. They are not at home to phone and ask. I am sure loads of people do this and it is fine. Perhaps the research referred to people who do this regularly. I am not sure. It was just that what I was told was so shocking I just posted.

...and there is always the one chance that someone would be that one person who does get ill or something. So it was really just because it was related to pregnancy that I responded.

I totally agree with you about doing everything you can before the birth that will make you feel good after but for which you won't have time again for what seems like forever.

Maybe Bluebella, you can ask the hairdresser?

Thanks for the replies everyone.

You know what? I may just leave it, just to be on the safe side.

I just am feeling really depressed at the moment, being off work, and not living with baby's father, and I thought it might help me to feel better, but prob not anyway

I asked my gp about this when pg with ds and he reckoned there was nothing to indicate that after 12 weeks you shouldn't have your hair dyed. I waited til 36 weeks. Am planning to get rid of my greys at 36 weeks again this time as nearly 9 motnhs of looking rough is plenty for me. Dr also said that if it made me feel better to ahve it dyed then that was another reason to do it.

i had foil highlights at 3 weeks preg !
and read that as the foil don't touch the scalp then fine
am going to get mine done again in a few weeks (will be about 17 weeks then) and i wouldnt risk it if i wasn't sure it was ok

I was told by obstretrician (sp?) you shouldn't have highlights - anything using peroxide - but herbal/natural dyes - even permanent ones - are fine after 12 weeks. I get my hair dyed using Aveda organic dyes (at Aveda Institute) and during this pregnancy have had it done towards end of 2nd trimester. Will have it done again before I give birth so I don't have to think about it post-birth for a few months. My doctors say it's fine.

Having said this, go with how you feel. No use in feeling stressed about it.

I'm currently at the hairdressers at 36 weeks and I regret everything. I'm having bayalage colour with no idea what it entailed. An hour in an uncomfortable chair (wearing Covid mask) having hair back-combed and foiled, then even more uncomfortable chair to have bleach washed out and back-combing painfully combed out, now toner for half hour where I'm typing this message (nay warning). Then finally have it cut! Been here 2 hours, no end in sight. So uncomfortable... Thought I'd pamper myself but it's torture. I underestimated the pregnancy at this stage. Word to the wise.....! Avoid or do sooner x
