Morning everyone, I'm off to Spain on Wednesday for the Easter break. I will be 5.5 wks preg when we go. I go to Spain (family villa)every year so mostly our but this year am a bit worried about food & drink as I'm not sure what will be safe to have and what won't. I know to steer clear of alcohol and soft cheeses etc, the standard advice but what shall i drink, can I have ice cubes, is it safe to have salads, can I eat the Spanish omelettes, tapas ????etc..if anyone can advise I'd be grateful.

Thanks B...

I went to Spain last year when 14 weeks pregnant and pretty much ate everything I wanted to (eg stuck to usual pregnancy rules and avoided things like shellfish) and was fine. HOWEVER my daughter (2) came down with very bad food poisoning which we think was probably caused by eating tapas from a bar top. So I might avoid eating food which has been left out.

Otherwise, Spain is pretty safe I would think. Enjoy!

I went to spain when I was about 16 weeks pregnant. I was cautious - I did avoid salad as DD got terrible salmonella the year before from salad but ate all other tapas. Just observe the 'normal' advice and stick to good places to eat - ie no street-type food. Sure you will be fine, after all Spanish women manage OK.

Hope you have a good holiday !

Spain id a developed European country. Eat whatever you would eat in this country - the risks are exactly the same!

I live in Spain, and the guidelines here recommend avoiding uncooked meats, which of course include all that yummy jamon serrano and chorizo.

They also say to avoid salad .

As for Spanish ommelette (sp?), it can be rather undercooked in the middle, so you might want to give it a miss if you're worried.

Oh, of course in many places if you have paella it'll be served with ali oli sauce, which is made with raw eggs.

Thanks to those giving me sensible information, I do appreciate your advice. As for the obscene message from 'TheAntiflounce', I'm not sure what I said that prompted such a ridiculous and inappropriate response but I suggest you stay off replying to people if you have no worthwhile input. This is a great site with very supportive and knowledgeable people, it does not appear you fit that category so mind your own business in future.

I am very sorry, Bronte. I was replying to AntiFlounce. I don't know why she posted on your thread, and I shouldn't have risen to her bait. It was very silly and juvenile of me.

I think her posting might have been my fault - I started a thread about using swear words in thread titles yesterday.

Sorry again. If it helps, I spent a lot of time in Sapin when I was pregnant and breast feeding and with a toddler, and none of us ever got ill. As somebody said, avoid stuff that's been left out on the bar, particularly if the weather's hot. Just take the same precautions you would take in this country. And prepare to be spoiled - Spanish people love pregnant people!

Seeker - no offence taken to your comments anyway, you were just annoyed as I was that someone silly was ruining an otherwise good thread.

I live in Spain and am 35 weeks pregnant. I've been told by my midwife to avoid uncooked meats, chorizo/Jamon serrano and other chacina (cold cuts) and to avoid raw eggs so perhaps avoid ali oli or mayonnaise that's home made. I've been told seafood is fine but as in the UK perhaps best to avoid seafood when out in case of food poisoning. Ice cubes fine, salads should be fine. Just follow same rules as you would at home. Have a lovely holiday!

Since when was the C word censored? It never has been before!

Might as well copulate off to flipping Bounty at this rate.

And I did not realise there was a rule against immature and unhelpful posts either - guess that's roughly 70% of posts that are going to be deleted too. I though to have a rule that someone must be helpful and mature at all times, you have to be paying them.
