Glucose in Urine and small amount of protein - just an infection???

I have just come back from seeing out of hours GP after suffering stomach pains to the right side last night and this morning. Baby moving well (I'm 28+weeks) so wasn't overly worried but thought it might be a urine infection and didn't want to leave it till monday.

Anyway Dr was fab very thorough, i took urine sample with me which he tested and it showed high levels or glucose/sugar and some protein. He mentioned that the sugar levels were on the very high side but said pg can make them look worse. I did mention that I have been away in centre parcs and have eaten chocolate and cake like it going out of fashion while mates were drinking!! As thought this could make levels seem high. My blood pressure was slightly high, but still lower than 120/80.

Sorry to go on, but would the protein and sugar be caused just by the infection?? I have been put on anti-biotics and told to see own GP 2m with another urine sample and possibly to have a glucose intolerance test and checks for diabetes. Would the glucose affect the baby and can you get diabetes in pregnancy that goes away after?? I have been bad with chocolate but not gained a huge amount of weight (1stone) feeling very guilty about it all.

Any ideas??

Protein in your urine can be a sign of infection

glucose intolerance test is usual if they find glucose in your urine so don't worry.

Extra glucose in the blood stream can long term make the baby grow larger than normal BUT if they find out this is a problem you can control it so please please do not worry. And yep gestational diabetes normally goes away after delivery.

How soon before scoffing all the cake did you take the sample? It can affect the sample (according to the last midwife I had). There is every chance the next sample will be clear.

You have a repeat GTT several weeks after having your baby to check everything has returned to normal.

Protein in urine could be infection (which would eb consistent with the pain)? It could also be a sign of pre eclampsia if associated with swollen feet, headaches or raised BP. You mention BP slightly raised but Dr didn't seem concerned? Your MW sould follow this up at next appt.

Glucose could be the fact that you sound as though you OD'd on sugar.

I think they look for 2 instances of gluc in urinebefore ordering a GTT. If it is diabetes it should be temporary and right itself after preg.
